Unhappy Mileage counter

I have a '79 911 with 183.000 km. The speedometer works fine but the mileage counter and trip odometer have stopped. I have checked the back of the instrument for loose or missing wires but have found none. Any suggestions for corrective action will be greatly appreciated.

This is a very common problem in these cars. There is a gear inside the speedometer that has stripped. ( the gear is plastic)
You can do a search and get some info here , and also there is a tech article explaining how to fix it, but the problem is getting the gear to repair it.
Mine did the same thing and I searched high and low to find the gear. Finally found a speedo shop that would just sell me the gear but they were not local and the gear itself was about 40 bucks with no guarantee that it would fit or be the right gear.
I finally bit the bullet and got the repair done at a local speedo shop for a little over 100 bucks.
Probably the best anyway because if you ever sell it, you have the speedo shop reciept to prove that you didn't tamper with the odometer.

Like Jerry, same thing happened to me. I sent mine to Palo Alto Speedometer (www.paspeedo.com) for the repair and also had them clean / freshen the dial and indicator. It really looks great now and the cost was about $50 more than what Jerry paid for just the repair.

I recently had the same thing happen to me and was fortunate to be able to fix it myself.

I do agree that it if you ever intend to sell the car it is best left to the professionals but if you are interested in trying it yourself, do a search under my name and the word "odometer." You should find 2 recent threads from me which will hopefully help you out.

If you have any specific questions about my threads, feel free to PM me.

Good luck.

Do you hear a clicking noise when it tries to turn over? My reset knob sticks some times and does not spring back all the way, which prevents the tumblers from rolling over. If I bull the reset knob beck out, it works again. Just a thought
