New Owner with question

I am a new owner of a 81 sc Targa. I just drove it back from purchase yesterday. A 660 mile drive and was a blast!! I still have a smile on my face! I have a few questions however.

1. Idle question. When I went to pick her up she was idling at about 1400 rpms. The idle will serge a little (about 100 rpms every sec or so) Is this normal and how do I adjust the Idle back to the 1000rpm mark?

2. Throtle question. I want to add this because it may have something to do with the first question. A few time when the car was warm the throtle will stay open at about 2krpm I would bring it into gear and release the clutch to bring it back down then its fine.

3. Crusie control. I really dont car if this works or not but it doesnt. Just wanted to through that in seeing it may effect the throtle in some way.

I am very happy, got a great deal and filled a dream of mine that I have had since a kid!! Many fun miles to come@!!

First, welcome to the P-car family. Post some pictures of your new baby. Everyopne always enjoys seeing them.

Sounds like a CIS problem. I had an '82 SC also with an idle problem was never resolved to my satisfaction... I think it was "wrench" related.

You are in an area with lots of Pelican heads. Talk with them, find out which shop is really good with this type injection system and let them resolve it right.

Thanks for your reply. I will get some Pics of the car up in the begining of this week. Anymore help on the idle would be great from anyone. I am very happy to be a new member!

1. Idle question. When I went to pick her up she was idling at about 1400 rpms. The idle will serge a little (about 100 rpms every sec or so) Is this normal and how do I adjust the Idle back to the 1000rpm mark?

You want the idle to be 900-950. There is a large (3/4" or so) idle adjustment screw on the left side of the throttle body behind the air intake. Try to turn it clock-wise to see if you can get the idle down. This could also be symptomatic of a mal-adjusted fuel mixture to compensate for a vacuum leak, especially if you cannot turn the idle adjustment down further.

2. Throtle question. I want to add this because it may have something to do with the first question. A few time when the car was warm the throtle will stay open at about 2krpm I would bring it into gear and release the clutch to bring it back down then its fine.

This sounds like the decel valve. This is a round unit with 3 hoses on it, including a small vacuum line. It sits on the right side on the motor by cylinders 5/6. Try to disconnect and plug the smaller vacuum line and see it that helps.

I think I'd get the car to a good shop to check the complete CIS system. There are too many places where problems can occur. They can check the fuel pressure, flow, mixture, etc and get it dialed in for you.

Welcome to the group! That smile will never go away :)

high idle and no cruise

look for a vaccume leak

Welcome Grey,
I can't really help you with your idle but I wanted to welcome another Atlanta member.
I am sure you will be a regular here . :D

i agree with slakjaw, i would look for a vaccume leak. you can spray wd40 with a tach hooked up, but that method is tough with an unsteady idle. some gas treatment might clean up the fuel dist. dryed out o-ring on the injectors. buy the book. see the movie. cis is fairly easy to diagnose enjoy your new baby. cruise diaphram. yes. deaccel vavle yes. stuck cold injector thermo yes. gummy fuel dist yes. fuel accumulator yes. all will cause a high eratic idle. you don't need cruise. push down with you right foot keep it there and hold on. the smile will never go away.

I have had Wayne's book for about a year now. I am going to use it and see if there is a Vac leak. I will also check the idle adjustment. I am looking forward to learning as much as possible. Thank you so much for the replies and ill keep you posted. Ill post pics of her this week :) Please feel free to post more suggestions.
