1987 carrera...in the last month or so, when i gently press the brakes pedal the brakes feel wavy, not smooth....and today i am getting a squeal, but very light one like fine sound bells
Any ideas of what should be done |

agreed, how many miles on your rotors? and how much left on your pads? Is the squeal coming form the front or rear brakes?

Some pads are designed to squeal when they need replacement. Sometimes the caliper puck, which must sit in the caliper bore in a set position, will rotate and you lose anti-squeal properties. Either way, get the front up and remove the wheels to inspect wear. Puck rotation is checked with the pads out.

Before you do anything, as I suspect you changed the pads with the rotors, take the car out and stink them brakes up. 70mph down to 20mph about five times. Beat them until they start to fade. You don't brake hard enough and/or you don't let them cool down enough before parking. The chemical reactions with pads (heat driven) and the deposits they leave on rotors is a big player in folks thinking they have brake issues. Dust em' off. Don't want you to die though. If pads could be near the end of their life take a look see as noted.

Thanks Chris. I found that rather interesting. I might give the 911's rotors a rub down with garnet paper (what ever that is) other than replacing them.

Garnets are basically silicates and a bit more like glass paper and should be readily available in various grades in woodworking shops
Silicon Carbide papers tend to leave particles sticking into the cast iron of the disc, which then tears up the pad surface. |
