could use the height of a crush sleeve if anyone's got one handy to measure.

making a shift knob and I need to know how deep to bore it out.

Here are a few measurements:

Height of the sleeve itself is 22mm.

The id of my original 73 shift knob is 16.7 mm.

Depth of the hole is 57mm.

The shift arm od is 15.2mm.

This sleeve is one that is currently available as a replacement part, and
fits much more loosely than the original 73 sleeve did.
When fitted into the knob there is a 2mm end gap, and the id of the knob is only reduced to about 15.3mm. Not much crush.

I would start small with the drill size. Maybe 15.5 mm and work your way up to get a good snug fit.

Good luck.

+1

Exact height as mine still "in the box"

An attempt to measure outside diameter just when the split touches when cylinder is squeezed is about 625 thousandths

16.7 MM on Joe's shift knob ID is 657 thousand.

That's 32 thousandths difference. A 32'nd of an inch.

Not sure what that gets as far as tight.

FWIW, I have the factory short shifter on my 81. I remember reading you have to cut the end of the shifter off a bit to sit the knob on the machined boss. Mine sticks up a bit too high from the boss. Hence, the new crush ring.
