Uh-Oh, tachometer fail

Driving along minding my own business when the tach stopped registering above 3000 rpm, and then seemed stuck and wouldn't drop down from 3000. I tapped on the glass, and that got it back to zero, but it wouldn't go back up past 3000 again. Instrument in the dash fail? Or somewhere else in the chain? Is it a nightmare to get the tach out of the dash?

thnx
