From the Workshop Manual.....

1) Remove starter from trans and turn flywheel until each of the 3 rivet heads on the pressure plate are visible through starter opening.
2) Install a spacer sleeve on each of the rivet heads and fasten with M6 x 12 allen head bolts This will lift the diaphragm spring and release tension on the throwout bearing.
3) Turn throwout bearing with a screwdriver through opening in trans housing 90 degrees until throwout can be slid past the throwout bearing.

Are you trying to remove the engine without the tranny? Just take out the two tranny bolts and disconnect the shift coupler and drop the whole thing. IMO much easier for removal and installation. I have never had to use steps 1 and 2 on the procedure Mr. Zielke outlined, just step 3.

Have fun!

BK's right, taking the motor & transaxle out together is real easy. Separating them after their apart is much easier, too.

PLUS - You can find ways to spend $$$ on the tranny while it is out as well...

Porsche Crest Doing this too...

I'm working on doing the same, no one mentioned taking out the CV joints though.
Good luck Fred, I would like to know the progress, are you doing this to rebuild or replace the engine?
