Flat Tire experience

Had "my" first flat in Porsche. Thankfully in a parking lot but 40 miles from home so some of what I learned follows. Rear Tire.
The spare inflated perfectly but slowly with my little 12V compressor, like 10 minutes plus to get 40 psi. Interesting process watching that thing unfold.
After removing the rear tire and moving the front to the rear I drove a short distance to a tire store that had just closed, grrr. Huge rear tire fit no where other than the front seat.
So in the tire store lot I examined the rear tire and see a straight through hole so decided to try repairing it with my temp kit (sticky string). That worked, the tire inflated and held pressure (took a LOOOOG time) so I put all tires back to original position.
Got to use my valve core tool to remove the core from the spares valve which allowed it to collapse quickly (that was a good thing to have in my tool kit).
Getting a new set of tires as these were 80% gone, I was hoping to drive them all summer but just didn't happen.
The take-away. If it happens again and I have my tools, go straight for the temp. repair of the affected tire and leave the spare alone. Use it only if the flatted tire is damaged beyond repair.
And yes I have the "good" AAA but I hate using them for stuff I can deal with. Saving them for the inevitable long flat bed rides home. Track day coming up !

Nice to hear that the collapsible spare tire works. I carry one around, but would probably stand far, far away when inflating it just in case.

Spare looked perfect, alot of collected dirt and debris in the fold from 28 years on its side. Inflated to 40 psi and takes so long, like watching grass grow, feels like your inflating a mountain bike tire. Definitely start the car when pumping, the pump runs much faster. Weird how with mine one side wall unfolded first, the tread was 5" plus off set from center and hanging over the other side completely. Only at 40 psi did the thing finally look mostly right, a bit disconcerting waiting for it to look like a real tire.

You're car would look AWSUM with deep dish'd steelies on it. Just sayin'

Also, I noticed you didn't have the matching Porsche original air pump...what kind of an enthusiast are you!? Everyone knows a true Porsche enthusiast requires the original air pump!

Anyone know if we can buy replacement tires for the spare? My confidence in my 30 year old tire is limited.

I am sure you can take it to most tire places and get one installed. Or at least get the size off of it and find something on the net.

I have one 100% confidence now in spare and my continued ability to repair using the temp kit. 15+ repairs easy, no failures.
Original is a slippery slope, best not go there with the things I've done or you never hear the end. I'm satisfied and having fun. I am quick to do what needs doing and don't look back.

The mexico blue color is amazing. Stock?

You must have people chasing you down constantly asking to buy the car from you.

Not stock, its blue everywhere you can see color until you look harder and see the old guards red. Painter did a nice job and was reasonable cost wise, makes me happy. Blue seems to be the new "in" color even though its very old. Most car colors are very drab to me. Saw a letter in Pano complaining about lack of interesting colors with P-Cars. Very personal thing, color.

The good colors really dried up at the end of the 70s.

i carry a plug kit, a new compressor, and a bottle of that 'goo' just in case in all my cars. The plug kit has come in handy on more than one occasion.

You can take that tire to a shop, remove the plug, and install a proper inside patch with plug and use that tire up. That's a clean hole, can be patched. (wouldn't track with it of course)

Yea, (and I actually would probably track it I'm so slow, not intending to solicit comments there as its not actually happening) the rest of that story is that the (small but convenient) tire place I took it to get the inside plug installed wrecked the tire taking it off the rim with that rotary arm thing that pulls the bead over the rim edge. He called and fessed that it was his mistake, very professional of him. I got them to pay me a few bucks and actually loan a tool for a day so I could do a different job. Getting a new set installed at a bigger "authorized dealer" tire place today. Deep breath kind of activity all in all.

Maybe could have fit mine if the strut bar wasn't in the way ! Can fit a 15" front track tire in there just. Your's must be the max fit, you took the spare out, right ?

I was surprised it fit at all. It was a 22x265. I don't think a 22x266 would have

Nothing else in there. not even carpet.

Regarding that dohickey, I'm pretty sure it didn't do anything visual going from 0 to 40 psi. ????

The doohickey is a bleed valve to quickly release the pressure when you are ready to stow the spare again. 😃

Valve core removal tool was a smart idea too!
