Question More detailed defroster question

This is a follow-up to my general question earlier on an '82 SC.

I removed the carpet and that cardboard thingy to get access to the fan and hoses for the vents. I also pulled the carpet to get access to the hoses on the driver's side down by the left footrest. I finally labelled everything and had the wife move levers back and forth so I could see what was doing what.

It looks as if the heater hose runs up from the cabin to a T under the hood where it can either be blocked off (for heat to the side vents) or opened where it mixes with air from the fan.

It seems as if everything is opening and closing just fine but the warm air doesn't seem to be mixing with the "fan" air when I turn on the blower. Mechanically wise, when I raise the heat levers between the seats, it closes a vent back by the heat exchangers, so instead of escaping, the heat is ducted to the cabin. However, how does this heat get blown into the cabin and ultimately to the defrost? I don't see any fans back there.

I think I'm almost there. I just need a little more information.

Thank you
Jim

Jim my 82SC is the same way. The heat can be blown from the rpm of the motor to the defrost, (windshield) and side vents. If the side vents are aimed to the windows, they will eventually defrost them so you can see out to the mirrors. The controls betweene the seats should operate a small blower motor in the engine compartment. It should be just to the left of the throttle actuator. Actually the drivers side lever turns the motor on, it is only one speed and sends heat to the cabin on the drivers side. The passenger lever sends heat to the passenger side but no fan blower control. The dash controls put the heat either to the feet or the windshield. The lower two levers send heat to the defrost if they are pushed to the right. Thats the windshield and side vents. The top lever allows fresh air to mix with the heated air (although it seams to be all cold air to me) The fan motor (dash controls) only comes on when in the far right position and seems to be variable from about half way. It does a good job of defrostiog with all three to the right, but if you want warm air at the windshield the top needs to be to the full left position. I hope this helps Speedy1

Thanks for the info Speedy. I have tried doing exactly what you recommend re. the levers and it still seems as if I only get cold air to the defrost. Is this the same with your's as well?

I get warm air to the side vents but it just doesn't go up.

Do you get heat to the footwells? You should be getting a lot of heat to either the defrost or the footwells.

Are you missing any hoses to or from the heat exchangers? Do you still have the aux blower motor and all of its hoses?

With the heater lever down and the engine running, do you feel a lot of hot air coming out of the rear heater flapper boxes?

The aux heater blower is working and all hoses are connected to the heat exchangers. I starter her up and hot air is coming out of the hole by the driver's left foot. Sunday, I'll start messing with different lever and hose configurations.

Thanks
Jim

lark,

I have the same problem. My guess is it's the blower in the engine compartment that isn't working. I'll be interested to hear what you find is wrong.

heater

Jim with the top dash control to the extreme left and the lowers to the right and the heater and defrost levers betwene the seats pulled up with the fan blowing in the engine compartment, you should be getting hot air to the windshield and the side vents. If not I would suspect one or more of your air transfer hoses to be dammaged or missing.
