I am considering to buy a 1983 911 sc, gorgeously restored. It has a 4 speed manual transmission. I am confused because every way I search I find that it should have a 5 speed transmission. The current owner says it always has had a 4 speed. Any comments?

It could have a 901 or 930 gearbox. That is the only way I can think of an SC having a 4 speed. Could also have the incorrect shift knob... If reverse is all the way to the right and down, chances are it was a fifth gear. If it is to the left and up, it could be a 901 4 speed or 930 4 speed.

My 1973.5 has a 915 4-speed. It's original. Very few of these exist. Most people have never seen one.
![]() I'm not sure if it was standard in 1983 though. Richard Newton Historic Race Cars |

I have a 4-speed type 911 gearbox in my '74, originally out of a '71

Long and the short of it is that the 911SC never shipped from the factory with a 4 speed transmission.
The 930 Turbo of that era did have a 4 speed transmission.

The 915 4spd gearbox was still standard issue for the middies, 74-77. Type numbers are as follows:
915/16 1974&75&76 Carrera 915/45 1975 US& ROW 911S 915/48 1975 ROW 911 915/49 1976 ROW 911 915/65 1977 ROW 911 The 4spd was dropped with the release of the 911SC, and even the Sportomatic was only made in until 1979. Later SC production did not have a sporto option. Regards, Matt

Hmmm... My '77 has always been a 5 speed. I don't think it was an upgrade when the first owner bought it new.

5spd was always an option. A factory option. Tick a box when the car is ordered and it comes with a 5spd. I think it was about $100 back then. Most US dealers ordered 5spd cars for their inventory. That was true all the way back to the longnoses. 4spd 901 was standard for quite a few years as well. Very often when one encounters an original 4spd car it was a Euro import because so few were ordered that way over here. Regards, Matt

Can you look for the tran type? On earlier cars it was on the bottom of the transmission, on the center web. If I am reading the 'Red book' correctly, the types are 915/62 ROW (Rest of World), 915/63 US, Canada, Japan, or 930/34 for all turbos.
Just to cover all bases, what is the engine type, this would be to the right and forward of the fan on a flat horizontal surface. Engine serial number would be on the vertical web to the right of the fan. Again, this is where the earlier cars are marked, assuming the later cars were done the same. Quote:

Turbo tranny in an SC would be a big fat turd. The gearing is all wrong. You would know it if you had a 930 tranny in that car.

Sorry, OT, but when I saw the thread title (just before reading), I thought Pelican forums were announcing shutting down

How about WP0EA091CDS170508... The 9 digit should be a letter, either Z or C
That would be a 1983 911SC US with Engine serial 64Dxxxx Type 930/16
