930 cv joints on a 901 trans
Are there any drive flanges or adapters that will allow me to use 930 cv joints on an early 901 transmission??

They can probably be made but why???
901 is not quite the stongest P-car transmission, I'm sure it's gears would shear long before CV-joints let go.

Strength is not an issue. The real issue is that I have custom length 930 axels and 930 joints and a 901 trans. I already own all of these parts...I am putting them on a '74 Thing chassis with narrowed rear suspension and a '56Ghia body...that is why I must convert 901 to 930. The extra allowable cv angles will also be welcomed with the short axels.

If you have the machinest skills, do it.

901 drive flanges are hardened...I would have to anneal ($$$) machine, weld and then reharden($$$) and then polish it.

I saw the 2 work together before on a early car with a 1988 complete 930 suspension with turbo cv's. The 901 flanges uses less bolts though. I would measure up on your project because they will probably work.

Did they work? I'm doing a 65 Vw Bus 901 conversion. Looking for the same reasons...
Thanks! Christopher |

Some of the 901 drive flanges are 108mm, so are the same size as 930 CVs. They use 8mm bolts though, not the 10mm ones that later 911s and 930s use. I suppose you could make some bushings to use the 8mm bolts in the 930 joints since it sounds like yours is a lower hp application. Another option that I think should work would be early 915 flanges, which are 108mm, use four 10mm bolts + two roll pins, and have the same spline as 901 flanges. With both of these options you wouldn't have a provision for a CV gasket, but many people don't use gaskets anyway.
I have a 911 racecar with an early 915 and 930 joints, and the combination works fine. I did have an issue with grease leaking, which got fixed when I got rid of the two roll pins and had the drive flanges tapped for two more 10mm bolts. Or maybe you could machine the flange for a gasket. Scott |

The 70-74 drive flanges use four 10mm bolts and two roll pins.
Won't the newer 108mm CVs work on the 108mm 901 flanges if you use four 10mm bolts and two roll pins in the CV? I ave read this works.

It should... I didn't realize the later 901 parts used 10mm bolts. Should be a good option. |
