Maximum depth/thickness of rear speaker 911SC ???
 

Before I start the process... if I start the process... of replacing the rear speakers in my 1980 SC coupe I am trying to determine what is the maximum thickness/depth speaker that will fit in our cars without modification.
I have a stock, intact rear shelf and I don't want to modify it.

What are your goals? The rear speakers don't add much in the way of value to your audio system. You're better off disconnecting them and putting the money into a modest under-seat subwoofer.

Yep. I deleted mine and just went with nicer front speaker components and a small amp under the drivers seat. Sounds great, and pretty light. The rears are too small to do much good, nothing that will create bass, and the highs are better handled by speakers up front.

Wow, seems like most of the responders are more intent on convincing you to dump rear speakers rather than addressing your question.
Well I'll try to actually address your dilema. I have had three different brands of speakers in the rear of my '80SC, Boss, Kicker and the original Blaupunkt. All three had a voice coil depth of approx 2" and fit with no problem. I think most 4x6" speakers will work ok as you have quite a bit of leeway with the depth of fit of the rear panel.
I think you may be like me in that you want original appearence and are not really concerned with creating an "audiophile experience". LOL

You can use any depth you want.

Use the speaker template, and if you need to add depth, have some lexan mounting rings made, and drilled as per the template.

Paint them satin black. Use longer screws.

The working plan/thought is not to modify parcel shelf - not to cut parcel shelf - not to have speaker and/or grill above parcel shelf.

I installed these mainly for price consideration.

As per the other posts, our rear speaker configuration
lacking the baffle space, does not provide much,
if any base response, or the option to install larger
speakers.

The only other option might be to install larger
speakers in the rear side panels as with the Cabs.

Youre best bet is to take the old speakers and grilles out set the shelf back in place and measure. There is certainly not a whole lot of clearance there and the way they make speakers now with huge magnets on them its not worth taking a chance

you can cut the plastic housings off the speaker magnets too.

I just replaced my rear speakers with some Infinity References from Amazon. The spec on them said the mounting depth is 1 and 15/16" and they fit fine. The only slight problem with fit was that they came mounted in these rectangular bezels (for lack of a better term) that cause a very slight gap under the stock grills (which are cracked to hell). I could have easily removed that bezel but I left it on.

If price is a concern, they were $50 and seem fine. I guess I should also note that these replaced MB Quarts that were in there when I got it and those were the same depth. The rear parcel shelf wasn't modified for that but he might have dug out a bit of the insulation (not sure). Also, I installed rear shoulder belts in the car and got a parcel shelf out of a newer 911 for that. The new shelf doesn't sit any differently that I can tell, but I just figured I'd point that out.

Next up is replacing the fronts.

How much weight will I save by getting rid of the rear speakers? :P

I finished this project today - thanks for all the input.
I went with a set of Kicker 4x6 speakers - they sound just as I would have expected.
At least, they produce sound - the previous speakers had no flex stuff between the speaker cone and the frame - speakers don't work much without that stuff.
I was not looking for a kick a$$ sound system (have those in our daily drivers) I just wanted something for the times you need music. I much prefer the motor sound :-)
