Passenger window not working after stuck switch
Well this one is my fault. Go out for a drive, roll down windows and I get it where I'm going and see the driver switch for the passenger window is stuck down. I put it in middle and then up to roll up window. Great. Well come out of store and passenger window will not got up or down.
Here is what I checked --fuses look good --driver window works no problem --passenger window when either side passenger switch is pushed up or down I can hear a click in the passenger door near the speaker So my theory is it is getting power. I'll check voltage since I just found a copy of the schematic. I will also pull the switch and apply 12v power to the two motor wires. But this sounds like I may have burned out the motor? Thoughts? |
A click but no movement does sound like a burned out motor. If you apply 12V directly to the motor and it doesn't move then that's your issue (perhaps it's better to apply it directly instead of via the switch wiring; that might contain a fault as well. Remove the doorcard and then you'll be able to reach it).
Otherwise check the relays in the trunk; on my car they easily burn out as well (but then you wouldn't hear a click in the door...) And to prevent this in the future perhaps get a new set of switches... ;) |
I've ordered a motor and switch this AM. Will return motor if not that. UGH!
I just picked up the car and didn't notice this particular switch was a little sticky. Will trouble shoot later today. |
I assume the problem is with your '89? I had an identical thing happen with my '90. Turned out the switch had failed. I googled it, and it seems to be a very common problem. It's very easy to install the new switch. Just carefully pull the old one out of the door panel, separate it from the connector, plug the new one onto the connector, and squeeze it back into the panel.

My experience has been that these switches are p.o.s. I always have a spare or 2 around. I have a sticky one now and always make sure it doesn't stick when I use it. The sticky ones will eventually just come off in your hand. My bet is it is the switch. Get an extra.

It seems the switch, if I'm reading the schematic right, only sends power over 2 wires to the motor. If the switch was bad would it be sending that power? So later today I'll measure voltage and the switch wires, I'll also try swapping switches. Regardless, I have a switch and motor coming tomorrow. I'm hoping its one or the other. The switch will be swapped for sure. |

Fixed. Replaced driver side passenger switch. This didn't fix the issue but new switch isn't sticky which is a good thing.
Checked voltages at switch on both sides, good and operating as expected. Still here that 'click' in the passenger door on switch operation too. Proceeded to pull the passenger door panel. Not too hard to do! Inside door looks mint, never opened before... anyway, pulled back some of the plastic and undid a couple hex nuts, nothing moving. Scratching my head on how to remove the regulator to install a new motor assembly. Decided to pull the motor out of the door, easy to get to through lower speaker hole, 2 T25 screws and the motor pulled right out. Hooked motor up to a 12 power supply, the damn thing turns! Both ways. Pulled motor off of replacement regulator i bought, but the shafts are different, can't just swap motors. So, put original motor back in wire it up, test, it works. Assumption is when the switch got stuck, it must have jammed the motor in a weird state. Its working fine now. Glad I didn't have to pull the regulator! Now off to replace my front strut inserts. |
