New flux capacitor, aka AC hose crimper

Check out my new AC hose crimper.

I'm planning finally start work on my long-puzzled over AC overhaul. Wish me luck.

Disclaimer
-No experience with fixing AC whatsoever.
-May post stupid questions soon.
-This is my hobby, and part of the joy of it, for me, is figuring out how stuff works

If anyone needs an AC hose crimped, let me know.

Cheers
Nathan

That's a real bute!
Too bad you are so far from SOCAL; I am renovating the AC on my 86 and will buy all new barrier hose by the foot, connectors, and your tool would have been the icing on the cake!

Wow. I have hoses and fittings made by a place called "Hoses and Fittings". That's all they do, make hoses and fittings. The first time I went there, I do a turn and say "If only I could find a hose or fitting.."

If you asked what to buy, I'd have suggested a quality vacuum pump such as a Robinaire, extra vacuum pump oil, and a set of quality gauges.

Are you planning 134a or R12? Do you have a multimeter?

Subscribed.

I was looking at that same crimper on Amazon, waiting for the day my car gets outta the shop for paint. Keep us posted, I'd be interested in seeing how well it works out for you. It might save you $ over the long haul to rent it to other Pelicans contemplating making their own hoses at home.

Just got my AC back up and running. Took the easy way to see how long it works. Rebuilt the original compressor that had blown a seal about 10+ years ago. Had a local shop see if the system would hold a vacuum which it did, put in a new dryer and converted to 134. So far blowing cold air and working well after less then a day. All original hoses etc. The big question will be how long does it last.

He will get to that. He may just become a new best friend to many.

Speaking of Robinaire. I have one. It's suggested that you change oil after every "pull". Well guess who ignored that and went to about ten pulls?

Finally changed it. Sounded like a butterfly's wings flapping. Two pulls later, sounded like it was working too hard. Changed oil. Butterfly.

There is something to that oil change business.

My eyes got a big as dinner plates reading that. I change the oil after every pull, sometimes before as well. The oil gets a LOT goo in it, and it gets hot too!!

Yep. One thinks they are older and wise and know some stuff....but I don't.

That was a full-on ignorance move.

She is still working, tho.

You know, no matter how bad a day I have had, at the end of the day I can pull up PP and if there is an AC forum with new posts on it, I'm laughing in about 60 seconds flat. Isn't it great that our cars are old enough that there are lots of people with problem AC systems? 😉

I just had my 84 Targa converted to 134a today, and am also hoping to enjoy some cool AC without having to convert to a full Griffith's system. Still prefer top off motoring, but my age is making me enjoy a cool ride in high humidity conditions. French Lick can get hot and humid in another month and I want to enjoy the Parade driving tours.

I don't know if it's still available, but the Pro Cooler helps. So does the heater trick. You adjust the heater lever switch so that you can turn on the rear blower and blow air through the heat exchangers. This wears out the rear blower faster, but it makes a huge difference in engine heat, which in turn helps the AC to not get overheated by the engine. Sorry, never tried a trinary switch, Ha!

This thing has been sitting in my Amazon cart for 2 weeks now while I convince myself to go forward with it. After having one line partially damaged from a curb bump and another scraped with the front tire, I figured that $150 investment now will give me unlimited hoses, vs. paying $70-80 each for new ones. AND, this lets you make the hoses a few inches longer that stock, so they can be routed better.

What barrier hose are you going to buy? The PO put Dayco hoses in my car, but I might go with Parker or Goodyear.

For your reference:

And sources for fittings:
Nostalgic AC - Fittings & Hose Kits

I've seen fittings on amazon as well, but it can be hard to find them.
Google searches for "beadlock crimp fitting" gets you somewhere.
