AC vent removal on 86-up

I need to remove my AC vents and I don't see how they are retained. The end ones have a small phillips screw from the side but it doesn't seem to be what was hold them in place. I've put a small screwdriver and gently wedged but no luck, and I'm afraid to tug on this expensive plastic without knowing what I'm trying to overcome.
Search on titles returned very little on AC vents...

I can happily answer my own question and post the solution for future searchers.
The vent has four spring tabs that need to be depressed with a thin tool like the spackle-knife I used. There are two on top and two on bottom, although mine seems to be missing one of them somehow.



Here's the blade I used to depress the tabs:
