Can anyone help plug any gaps in my '74 Carrera's history?
Hello folks,
I've been a 911 lover forever. About 10 years ago I almost plucked up the courage to buy a 993 C2S in the UK for around £30k but it felt a bit expensive relative to my earnings at the time so I moved on (doh!). Anyway, here I am older and not much wiser and was once again hunting for 'my 911'... A few weeks ago I posted in the Marketplace Discussion (my first ever post on the forum) a link to an eBay ad for a modified white '74 Carrera with claimed Peter Gregg/Brumos history (but nothing that could be proven, of course). VIN9114400034. The sensible advice was 'not for your 1st 911' but the itch wouldn't go away. So I had a PPI done which was not great to say the least - engine and transmission need rebuilding and the rear suspension and sway bar setup was "hazardous". So obviously I bought it! Joking aside, I was able to do a reasonable deal on the car that factored the work needed into the price and discounted the claimed Gregg/Brumos history. While I've been discussing with the workshop the scope of the work needed to get the car back to decent (safe!) driving condition - I came into this wanting a car I could really drive, not a garage queen - I've been hard at work on Google trying to trace my car's history and not done too badly so far: - Delivered to Brumos as Peter Gregg's demo car in late 73. He put blue and white Brumos stripes on the car. I have a picture of the car from this time. - Sold to a 'local Jacksonville physician' in late 74 who seemingly kept the car until 1988 - Sold to a 'young guy', still in Jacksonville, who barely used the car but fitted it with RS P&Cs, cams and brakes. Either this owner or the previous is called Jay Tolbert - Byron (Racerbvd) knew him but has lost contact. Does anyone know him as he's a major missing piece in this story? - Sold in 2000 to John Poor in Arizona who kept it for 3 years but did nothing to it - Sold in 2003 to Wayne Vitale in New York, a racer/instructor/port construction executive/beekeeper (!) who ditched the Brumos stripes, stripped out the interior, fitted a cage and RS bumpers and campaigned the car at PCA E-Class events - Sold in 2011 to the owners of the Classic Car Club of Manhattan who tidied it up a bit, fitted Carrera script down the side and used it as a club car and auto cross campaigner. - Sold to me 2 weeks ago! If anyone on the forum knows the car or any of the characters in the story, I'd really love to hear from you. The different uses and mods that owners make to 911s is one of the truly fascinating aspects of the marque and it gives me a real buzz to piece all this together while I wait for my car to get back on the road. Cheers, James |

I should have said: I'm in contact with John Poor and (think) I have an email address for Wayne Vitale already.
