Speaker suggestions ??

Hello,
I replaced the original Blaupunkt with an Alpine unit last year. Needless to say, the original speakers sound horrible and on the occasion I would some accompaniment to the Flat Six symphony. I have read some previous posts but some suggestions are no longer available...I would be interested in simple replacement speakers for front and rear in my 89 Carrera Coupe.
Thanks for your input,
Peter

I'd start here:

Trust me, you'll miss the Blaupunkt. Hopefully you hung on to it. I got rid of a modern JVC or something for a period correct Blaupunkt, didn't touch the speakers and the result sounds 10x better than the JVC!! My conclusion is that the Far East stuff is a bunch of crap.

Check our sponsor as they have a good selection of speakers for Porsches.

some of the new speakers have humongous magnets that won't clear at the back. I used Focals.

Which Focal model did you use? Any custom brackets to mount them?

Yeah Crutchfield states adjusted fit...guess I wanted some that would match the size of OME ones...have not heard of Focals before. Still have the original Blaupunkt for sure.

Focals are lovely sounding speakers. I dig them, along with some older A/D/S units. Smooth and not so bright might be an appropriate term for how some Focals sound. I don't know about new models though. My 911 is very loud and I'd like some speakers that can balance out the growling snarling engine sitting behind me

Not sure which alpine head unit you've installed, but I'd really suggest adding a KTP-445A power pack if it's compatible. It's essentially a 45 x 4 amp that really improves a low power head unit without taking up much room. I have mine under the passenger floorboard. I've paired that with alpine spr-50 5.25" fronts and sps-406 4x6" rears and a kenwood powered sub under the passenger seat. It's pretty low cost and sounds full and loud when I actually use it. Install was painless, factory locations, no spacers or adapters. I didn't use the alpine covers, I had an old pair of polk covers that looked so close to 964 covers I couldn't resist. Search for rear 4 x 6 covers in the parts thread and you've got a good sounding stealth system for little cost. Which in my case is a good thing because like I said, I rarely use it.

I've been trying to locate the OEM Blaupunkt Monterey for my car and have had no luck for over a year. I could totally dig popping in a 'mix tape'

There is/was a member here that made some great spacers to allow a nice flat surface on which to mount 6 1/2" door speakers. I don't know if he has anymore left, but they allow you to install the larger speakers easily into the doors.

I had Morel Tempos installed on mine, decent but not great, since they're just 5 1/4", thus avoiding spacers or bigger holes.

I think someone did a custom job back in the 90's for my 82 Sc. Have some nice ADS speakers and still have cassette tape player which I use for that vintage sound

I bought Hybrid Audio components and crossovers. I caught a closeout special as the newest models were coming out. They are undeniably the best speakers I have ever had in any car I have ever owned.

Personally, I tried some of the Crutchfield speakers and I sent it all back. I deleted the rear shelf and only have mids in the doors and tweeters in an under-dash panel. Speakers in the rear are pretty much useless.

If I didn't want to be able to listen to my iPhone for music/navigation/radar and traffic, I wouldn't have anything in the car and just listen to the flat 6. But it sure is nice when I do listen to music.

You can't buy happiness, but you can buy car parts which is kind of the same thing.

focal, morel and hybrid all make decent speakers but they tend to be on the more expensive end of the spectrum. if you are going to start throwing money around i would suggest dyn audio, but be prepared for sticker shock

Doc, you need 5.25 or 6.5 for the front door, and i suggest the 6.5. for ease of installation. you can get the 2way versions that contain the mid and tweet in one unit. the rear parcel uses 4x6 but some have fitted 6x9 for a little more low end without too much work.

as far as brand, well that is like asking what is the best gas or best oil to use - everyone has an opinion. if you are not an audiophile i would suggest going to your local bestbuy and listening to what they have available to see what you like. then once you find something go to an online site like sonicelectronix.com as their prices are typically much better. the alpine type-r or type-s lines are decent performers at a reasonable price.

that being said crutchfield is usually more expensive than anyone else but they have the world's best customer service. period. no one can touch it no matter what the company sells. i bought a headunit from them and had problems with it. tested everything i could and called them to return it. they overnighted me a replacement with a shipping label to send the defective unit back. no one else does that.

I installed Alpine type R's in my car and love them. I'm looking to add a under seat sub and amp to give the system a little more oomph.

Btw, listen to nineball, the guy knows his stuff. Not that others don't but I think he told me at some point in a conversation he did high end installs.

I have 51/4 Polk Audio in the doors, Boston Acoustics plates in the rear and a Kenwood subwoofer under the passenger seat. Sony head unit and all running off a Odyssy PC 680 battery. Gotta save some weight! ; )

I installed some Boston Acoustics and they sound great.Replaced my Blauplunk Reno with a blue tooth Sony head unit along with a 200 watt amp to boost the volume a bit.

Good thread, got me to thinking. I'm going to want to replace my door speakers shortly. Here's my goals:
  1. Decent speakers, but don't need to be great, as I don't have high end system and don't listen to the tunes all that often.
  2. Suitable size to mount nicely with coilerman's speaker spacers - so suitable to use with a 5.5" hole.
  3. Need to look as plain, stock and basic black as possible. No bling at all.
I'm actually far more concerned with points 2 & 3 (fit and appearance) than I am with how they sound. Suggestions?
