Unusual steering wheel column "brushing" noise?

My steering wheel makes an odd "brushing" noise when I turn it. The wheel turns very smoothly, and it doesn't rattle or rock (I replaced the steering column bushings, and steering rack, a couple years ago).

The horn works fine, as do the wipers.

It sounds like an electrical contact issue.

Suggestions as to what to replace?

- Mike

Check the horn contact ring and plunger, steering wheel off needed. First make sure its not as simple as the plastic mouldings top and bottom touching the turning wheel.

+1 the horn has an electric wire attached to it (I think it is a ground). Why i do not know but every 5-7 years it starts to touch the inside o f the steering column....

Maybe it is a maintenance item.

I had this issue with the contact as well. I added some conductive grease and the "brushing sound" was eliminated.

Thanks all, I will pull the steering wheel tomorrow and look for that wire. Hopefully, it's the culprit! That noise has been driving me nuts for far too long.

Let us know what fixed it. I have an 86 930 that is making the same kind of noise. I already checked that the plastic molding is not touching the steering wheel. The steering column bushing was recently replaced by the PO.

Got sidetracked today.

I'll dig into the project tomorrow and report back... with pictures.

I pulled the wheel off and it is obvious where the noise is coming from... copper on copper.

The part number (#911.613.521.00) comes up as a "Wiper Contact," which is odd. Assuming I can find that part, what about the part that is on the wheel? Any ideas?
