Tragic accident in the news

Saw this in the news. The article says it was a red 1983 911 that was rear-ended by a Mercedes. The driver of the 911 is in critical condition and the passenger was killed.

Anyone know if this was a fellow Pelican?

Sad.

Around here I'm checking my six constantly when slowing or at a stop, often pumping my pedal to flash my rear lights. A LOT of stoned/drunk/idiot drivers here...

You realize how small these cars are when today's Honda Civics and Toyota Corollas tower over you.

Very sad indeed.

LED Brake lights

Very sad.

I just installed Philips 1157 LED (P21/5) red led brake lights in hopes of alerting those behind me that I am stopping / stopped.

I installed LEDs and a third brake light strip to my SC a few years ago. I also check my mirrors often whilst stopped and will pulsate the brake lights if I see a vehicle, depending on the situation.

One time we were stopped at a light on a 2 lane road with 55MPH limit. The vehicle that was behind us had lagged behind before we got to the stoplight. I pulsed the brakes like mad as it sure as heck appeared that it was NOT going to stop in time. They did but it was a panic stop for them.

That is sad:-(

Brighter brake/tailights might not help since the Mercedes driver was drunk and speeding.

About 3 years ago a young girl was killed while driving down the road near my office by a drink driver.

She was cruising at 45 MPH and a drunk Surgeon driving his Lexus rear-ended her at a speed in excess of 100 MPH. He didn't even touch the brakes:-(

Sorry to hear - sad story.

I decided a couple weeks ago that I wouldn't drive my car again until I had a functioning 3rd brake light... which come to find out was a good idea as my brake lights quit during winter storage. Planning to eliminate entirely the troublesome pressure switches if present.

Doesn't the cabrio come with a 3rd brake light?

Hella TBL is a good choice for those of you interested. I got mine from Daniel Stern. I also have the Phillips bulbs listed above.

There is only so much you can do to overcome the stupidity of others, but every little bit helps.

Wow so sad. No pics of the 911, I guess judging by the looks of that merc, probably not much left of the Porsche.

I only saw photos of the Benz, and it's destroyed. I cannot imagine what the 911 looked like. From what I read, there is no mention the Porsche was stopped, but perhaps I missed that.

God bless them all.

The article just said that the 911 was rear-ended. Odds are that it was stopped or stopping. The other driver could've been following too close. It's all speculation at this point.

As someone pointed out, our cars are small compared to most cars on the road today. The modern 911 dwarfs our older cars. Plus we don't have much in the way of safety mechanisms either.

Like you said... God bless them all.

If the injured driver turns out to be a member and someone here knows them, I was just thinking it would be a nice gesture, if appropriate, to let them know their Pelican buds were thinking about them. Life is too short, ya know?

The captions to the black car photos state that car is from a different accident from April 2015.

Did I read this wrong or is there another article or am I losing something in translation. The article states that the 911 was hit in the rear, causing it to veer off the road and go airborne. Sounds tome that both vehicles were traveling at speed at the time.

Tragic either way, but unless I am missing something in the article, there is a lot of speculation going on.

At least from the photos in that article, it looks like the Merc hit with some serious speed.

Pulled the google map and this is the airport terminal loop. Not a high speed area ... few stoplights. Mostly flat, a wash between east/west bound side of the loop and a couple aerial roadway ramps. Plenty to speculate... pit maneuver by merc causing porsche to lose control and flip in the wash or off the side of the ramp. Who knows.

24 year old Mercedes driver. Instant assumption of inexperienced and reckless.

50 year old 911 driver with 42 year old female friend who may have just arrived at airport. A bit of fun goosing the car and showing off? A little drag race action with the Merc for grins?

Suspect it will come out in time. IMR-Merlin's comment makes sense. Both were moving at speed.

Just saddening.
