911sc Rear Targa trim question

So I'm restoring my '82sc and before re-installing the rear targa trim, it looks like there used to be a seal of some kind underneath the brightwork pieces. See photo below for the piece I'm referring to.

Would I be ok in re-installing them without the seals underneath? Am I making any sense?

Just to be clear, this would be sandwiched between the aluminum trim piece and the paint correct?

Yes.

FWIW, I am almost certain the rear trim piece that wraps around the curve of the window is brass.

You also have to be careful with the length of the trim piece (not trim - I mean the in between piece) at the end towards the rear of the window. At the end of the bright work, it dives down under the window and is held in place by the fat rubber seal around the rear window.

Will the rear window be out?

Yes the rear window is currently out. I actually found a picture I took of another Targa and under the bottom of the brightwork piece you can barely see the lip of the piece I'm referring to.

Here's another shot of where the brightwork piece goes underneath the rubber window seal. You can see the lip of the buffer piece I'm referring to under the brightwork trim.

Yes, I have the remnants of this piece of rubber on my targa, but it's all cracked to pieces in the place where your last picture shows, and seems shrunken everywhere. You can see the best part of mine in this pic:

If it were me, I'd put the seals in. They're there for a reason I'm sure. That rear window is not something you'll probably want to have out again any time soon, so while it's out, finish the job right. I wish I could get to where you are, and have my glass and brightwork out to refinish it all. If I were at that point, I'd replace all the rubber for sure.
