1987 944 Starter making noise, not starting

Moved to correct forum

Silly question, but are the bolts tight?

Also this is the 911 not 944 forum.

Good question, I will check that out when I get home. So the bolts come loose and the starter doesn't engage?
And I realized I was in the wrong forum as soon as I posted so I edited and moved it to the 944 forum. I said I was a noob. :)
Thanks for responding.

well, that could be an issue. If it was making a grinding noise, the bolts could be working out and the starter could be out too far to engage the flywheel now.

Or you have a bad drive gear on the started, worn ring gear on the flywheel etc.

worn solenoid so the drive gear is not engaging the fly wheel... first thing is to check the bolts, see if they are tight.

If so, pull the started and bench test it.

Thank you!

Not sure if this is the case here but I bought a rebuilt Bosch starter couple of years ago and it would make, on random occasions. a horrific grinding noise. I'd try again and worked fine. Eventually it began to get even more unreliable and went with a hi torque starter. After I took the old one off I noticed the pressed in "ring" near the starter gear had come off, probably right out of the box, and would occasionally get jammed in the gear. Thats when I started hearing about how horrible the rebuilt Bosch units are.

Where did you get the hi torque starter?
