1973 911 2.4 Oil Pressure Switch?
I bought a 73 2.4, and it just arrived =) Very excited =) I just love a new project in my life =)
Does the 2.4 have an oil pressure switch, OR just a sender OR should it have both, like the later engines? Its a MY 73T 2.4 Euro on Zenith 40 Tin Carbs. It clearly says oil under the idiot light on the guage. I think the answer is some after market senders have two prongs, and that one can be both, so either I buy one of those. OR I fit an oil pressure switch, and move the oil pressure sender to the back of the engine (near the fan on later engines), and change to the later cam line? Before I do either - my oil idiot light flashes with the ignition on, but not running! It should be just a solid red light right? I then start the engine it goes out, oil pressure on the gauge look good (40 - 80 psi), but then the light flashes on at idle (20 psi on guage). Engine cold. I have a 73.5 and am not aware of a oil pressure switch. There is an oil pressure sender next to the oil temp sender on the right side of the engine down near the fan that goes to the Oil pressure gauge, but no warning light for oil pressure. There is no wiring lead on my engine harness that would go to a Oil pressure switch. All harness leads accounted for on my rebuild.

There is no indicator light for the oil pressure, just gage. Unlike later cars, sender has only one contact.
The top light is for the brakes, B symbol under it. If flashing when running, I believe it means parking brake is on, or problem with pressure switch on master cylinder. Bottom is alternator. ![]()

ahh thanks guys, what a numpty that solves it! Ive had 3 x SC's and 1 x 2.7, this is the earliest 911 ive owned. Ive had a 356, and loads of vw's so never seen a car without the light!
Ok parking brake it is, with the ignition on if I pull the brake up and down the light goes on an off (flashes) Thanks, really helpful =) Can i ask, 2 more questions? When the ignition is off, the oil pressure guage is on 0, when i turn the ignition on, it jumps to the first white line (ive posted two pictures). Is that normal, or should it stay on 0 until the engine is running. I'm going to test my oil pressure anyway, and I have a spare sender as i bought one by mistake about 6 months ago for my 2.7 Next question - Im guessing my seats have been changed for later ones? The fronts look like 2.7 era, and the rears? Should the correct 73 seats have more flat seat bases (the bits you sit on)? The rear shelf is smooth, so im guessing its just the rear and front seats i need to change out. Pics below : ![]() ![]() Last edited by strictly; 06-26-2015 at 07:07 AM.. |

On my 73.5 911T I did have an oil pressure warning light.its been a while but I do recall the OP light would flicker when it was very hot, engine at idle (normal according to Porsche). It is possible I did not have an OP gauge..don't remember.
Solved the hot-flicker oil pressure lamp by using a selection of new OEM oil pressure switches (I worked in the Porsche shop at the time) and changing them out till I found one that was calibrated just right and the OP light remained off at idle/hot. I recall it was under the air box in the usual location..its been a few years. |

My car has the S gages with no oil pressure warning light. I would think an oil pressure warning light was on the base model with no pressure gage..
