Agree and I do have an all stock numbers matching 86 M491.
But sometimes at the track you might find you want more 911. :)

Mine will never be a real million dollar RSR, though it should be able to keep up with some of them. ;)

My updates on the same 911, before Long hoods became too valuable to modify.

Now you can go tell your friends that your stock 911 got beat by a kit car. ;)

it's about what makes you happy. It's only money. I bought a '74 that was converted to 930 look because I planned on using it as a project car. I derive as much enjoyment from working on it in my garage as I do driving it. My chosen profession has me sitting in meetings and at my desk all day, my relaxation time is in the garage with the car on the lift tinkering with the suspension, or fixing little patches of rust, it's damn near therapeutic.

Exactly--

I personally like the "sorta" backdates that still have the impact bumpers. H4s, Chrome highlights, maybe some Pallas hood lights, wide 15-inch wheels. Simple, effective..easily reversible.

Bingo! I bought a '72T in '98, long before "longhood madness" began. I bought it to play with, not as an IRA. I've done everything on this car myself (except a respray). I have done many (blasphemous) modifications to it over the last 17 years, including swapping out the 2.4T MFI for a 3.2 Motronic. Every modification I have made has increased my overall enjoyment of owning and driving this car. And yes, these same modifications have undoubtedly decreased its resale value. Yes, it is "therapeutic". I'm far from done. I figure I got at least another 17 years of mods to do.

Roger

I hate my kit car, I should never have turned my 73 into a 73 RSR. Now I can't stand going into my garage. That Ted guy is a bad influence and should be banned

;)

Tell your wife you need a spanking.

Matt Monson 07-09-2015 12:22 PM

Sometimes you buy an old 911 that's just begging to be backdated.

There's a Gulf Blue '74 911S hiding under all that 80s bling...

Nick Triesch 07-09-2015 12:43 PM

If you are a rich guy, go ahead and back date or up date. It does not matter.

porsche930dude 07-09-2015 12:56 PM

Yup I agree. Build what you want. Unless youre car is all original and perfect than the next guy is probrobly going to build it the way he wants anyway. People usto say buy the newest car you can afford. People dont seem to say that anymore. Times change trends change cars can change too. Ted's car is a prime example of that. Its just metal and money.

wayner 07-09-2015 12:57 PM

Ironically my 73 was once updated to the look of an SC sometime in its life...like Teds, my car has lived many lives, but only one of the transformations while in my hands

That update probably saved its life at some point. I know that my re-backdate did

( that spanking idea sounds interesting...)

...versus poor people who have to stick with unmodified cars?

This thread just inspired me to create a new signature

Matt Monson 07-09-2015 02:32 PM

Well put wayner.

True, whatever floats your boat.

You got me there! And I agree, for track cars it's acceptable ;)

Quickstep192 07-10-2015 01:58 AM

A friend of mine has frequently quoted a stastistic: " Porsche is the most owner modified car of any make"

I never investigated the statistical accuracy of his claim, but it sure seems plausible.

I hate to admit it, but yes...you are right. Although it is a real 73, it is not a real 1973 2.8 RSR, and besides, although the engine is the spiritual successor to the 2.8, the short stroke real carerra 3.0 motor it holds is just wrong for 73...and I also use it on the street (Sigh...I'd better give up and give this car to Ted, I'll never get it right)

I'm going to stick to writing signatures instead, and hire Matt as my editor...;)

NYNick 07-10-2015 05:06 AM

Backdate, schmackdate.

Do whatever you want to your car.
