'70 911T Died then came back to life

I drove my '70 911T off an on over the weekend with no problems. Sunday afternoon I came out of a restaurant and it didn't start right up like it usually does. It struggled for just a bit but then fired up. On my short drive home and about a mile from home the car basically shut down completely. I coasted into a parking lot. The car cranked just fine but would not fire at all. To me the symptoms seemed like out of gas, however the gauge read about 1/4 tank. I thought the gauge might be off so I walked home and got a gas can. Went back to the car and put in two gallons of gas. Still would not start. Waited about another 15-30 minutes and car started right up. I was hoping it was just out of gas but when I went to fill it up it only took about six gallons. I am a bit nervous driving it now as I am afraid it could shut down again at any time. Any suggestions on what could have happened or what I might check. THANKS!

Check the fuel filter at the exit of your fuel tank. You'll have to drain your tank to clean it out.

I had this problem back in the day. It was caused by different things.

My CDI was intermittent. Check for the whine sound from the box. If no whine check for power to the CDI, could be a fuse or a dying CDI.

I had a bad electrical connection in one of the plugs under the dash that connected to the harness in the trunk. My whole car would die. I would wiggle the plugs under the dash and it would spring back to life.

might be your CDI become dead when hot or your electric fuel pump.

I've had this occur three separate times and each was a different issue:

1. rust in fuel tank, when fuel level would get low the rust would clog the out going filter at the tank.

2. CDI (was actually a permatune) went bad, would get very hot and shut down. After some time to cool down it was good to go again but would repeat shut down when heat rose.

3. Fuel pump. Died intermittently over time and one day in Honolulu rush hour traffic. Would come back to life but then die again.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. Going to try to clean out tank. Is there a screen filter at the tank and another cartridge type filter in line?

I don't know where to find the screen filter on the tank. Is it underneath? Do I need to drain and remove tank? Also, the car has Zenith carbs now. I also looked for the cartridge filter in the engine compartment and didn't see it. See photo. I followed the fuel line to the carbs and see what looks like a filter at each carb. See photo. I probably should remove and clean or replace them while I'm at it.

On your year tank, the fuel screen is part of the fitting for the fuel outlet line that is screwed into the rear of the tank. You will need to drain the tank, unscrew the fitting and you will see the screen.

And if that screen is still in there, rip it out and put a filter in line. This happened to me a zillion years ago with a 70 T, that was the fix and never had this problem again.

Happened to my 70 may years ago. It was an intermittent CDI box. Have carried a spare since. Friend had his 70 quit. Again it was the CDI. He now carries a spare. These 3 pin boxes are getting long in the tooth. ************ makes a digital replacement which I now use.
