Can you get RHD lenses for sugar scoop lights?

G'day Guys,

I am wondering if you can get RHD lenses for the standard US spec Sugar Scoop lights?

I want to do a H4 conversion but the price is holding me back at the moment and I was wondering if I could get a cheap set of RHD sugar scoop lenses to let me get my car registered while I save a bit of money.

Thanks

Stewart

I might be wrong here, but I think the U.S. style lamps are just standard 7" headlamps as fitted to most cars of that era. If your car has been complied for Australia it should have had them changed to RHD spec.

Yes, when I changed out my sugar scoops they seemed like any other POS round light from that era. In Aus you would likely find a RHD sealed beam at any automotive store. Be warned, I must've had better eyes then, or had some kind of gnarly radar when driving at night....they are "legal" but almost useless. Cheers.

Your local automotive store should carry 7" round H4 headlights (that are Right Hand Drive) -- these are drop-in replacements for the sealed beams you have. Note, however, while Drisump's comments re poor lighting are accurate for US-spec sealed beam headlights, the drop-in 7" round h4 headlights I used to replace my sealed beams made a HUGE difference in both aiming and brightness over the sealed beams, especially if you run high(er) wattage bulbs. Also a good idea to run a relay on the headlight circuit.

You might want to remove one of the sugar scoops, take out the round sealed beam headlight and bring the sealed beam headlight itself to an auto parts store to get a replacement -- these are pretty generic and should be no real issue to get a right hand drive replacement (cheap!)

Thanks Guys,

Great news, I have a set of sealed beam's at home which I think will be fine to start off with.

The help is greatly appreciated, it's hard to work this stuff out when your car is in the US and you are in Melbourne.

Yes Darrin as far as I know the flat "generic" H4's put out as much light as a Porsche Euro lens H4. I've had a number of cars with flat "generic" E code headlights and they have a very good light pattern as well as good power. The normal sugar scoop should accommodate either the flat H4 or the sealed beam common to most cars of the era. Personally, I'd get either of the two halogen alternatives (flat or "Euro" lens) but bear in mind that if you do, you should install a relay kit supplied by our host. Apparently the power requirements for the halogens can cook a few expensive components over time. Cheers
