Fuel Pump Alternatives for CIS to Weber Conversion

Since converting my CIS to Webers years ago, I have been using the CIS fuel pump (high pressure) with a restricting collar to ahcieve the requisite pressure for the carbs. This restricitng collar was supplied by PMO, and, while I was initially skeptical, it has worked out really well. Anyway, I want to eliminate the high pressure pump for a variety of reasons and use a low pressure pump and a pressure regulator. I've ruled out the small square Facet pump as an alternative. When searching the archives, I see that some folks have used a Holley fuel pump, but there are numerous comments about it being very noisy.

For folks that have converted to Webers I'd like to hear about the type of fuel pump used, whatever it might be, and impressions about how it's worked out. Where did you mount the pump you used? What, if any, pressure regulator did you use? Thanks for any input

I know you may look down on this one being from a "lesser" Porsche board, but here is one guys experience with a fuel pump for carbs.

I have a facet on my 66 it seems to work fine on a 2.0 motor, But I'm putting a rs spec 2.7 in my 76S and need some thing better, I bought a rotry pump like on a 70 model,$50 with the weber line and hoses, I think it is alot like a pump on the 914-6 like they were talking about.I think the plumbing should be close My cis pump is about shot and they are about $200 to$300 to replace it, The holly pumps work well but are very noisey

Gregk1, what is the 70 model rotary pump you mentioned? Is this an oem Porsche pump? If so do you have a part number, since I'm not familiar with this.

I have a Facet pump but it loud....
Facet now has a low pressure Rotary pump which is something
I would go with.... I think Bosch might also make an after market rotary pump.

My .02

Don't buy a Holley, they need rebuilding from time to time and are way to noisy. A much more reliable and quiet option is a Carter pump, Summit Racing and Jegs carry them use an adjustable regulator to lower the PSI for the webers. Carter pumps even have rubber insolators to their mounting brackets, I can barely hear the pump mounted under the driverside cab on the frame of my 4x4 before starting the engine and absolutely can't hear it when the engine is running. I just bought one to replace the Facet pump on my P-car, making this the third vehicle I own with a Carter pump.

I will second the loudness of the Holley. I'm thinking about swapping mine out for a Carter.

Cool

Looked at the Carter display on the Summit site.

Which one of the Carter fuel pumps are we talking about anyway?

Good luck,

C'mon guys (and gals)...some good info posted so far but there must be more of us that have converted to Webers and have dealt with the fuel pump and pressure regulator issue. what pump have you used, where did you mount it and what do you think of it. Same questions for the regulator. Thanks

Here is my setup for regulator:

I put a Holley pump in the stock early location, near the rear wheel. I hate it. It's going back in exchange for this Carter:

Webers and fuel pressure regulators, yes or no?

Thumbs up

I have used and highly recommend the Facet mechanical interrupter pump like Zendalar posted a pic of. I mounted it with a hose clamp to the old fuel filter bracket on the left side of the engine compartment. It proved to be perfectly reliable and fairly quiet.

For a regulator I used the "dial" type which worked fine. The fully adjustable regulators (Holley, etc) along with a gauge are certainly more accurate but they're not necessary for a street car.

BTW, what's your beef with the Facet solid state pumps? If you're concerned about noise, they're absolutely silent and probably more reliable than the mechanical ones. The only downside to them I see is their relatively low capacity, but you can always run two if one doesn't meet your flow requirements.

The pump to get is the Bosch roller type, part number 911.608.107.00. These were made for the carb'd 911 and maintain the correct pressure at .2 to .3 bar (2.8 to 4.2 lbs.). The pump has fittings for R (return), D (delivery) and S (suction). When fuel pressure in the delivery line to the carbs exceeds 2.8 to 4.2 lbs, the return valve in the pump activates and bleeds off excess fuel back to the tank. This feature ensures that pressure remains within prescribed limits and that the needle valves are not overwhelmed.

I have run this pump for years with my Webers. No pressure regulator is required with its use. The other advantage is that it fits perfectly in the OEM location for the fuel pump. On my car, the wire harness for the 2.4 MFI fuel pump was a perfect connect to the socket on the fuel pump body, for an added benefit. Also, since it's a Bosch OEM pump, you can expect that it will run for years without problem.

The down side-- I understand that these pumps are difficult to find now and have gotten quite expensive. I got mine from Europroducts a number of years ago. If our host cannot get one, try Europroducts.

Good luck.

It better run for years as they are $400 now (if you can get one). I think can get them for $200 rebuilt from a Pelican competitor.

Returns are needed on positive displacement roller pumps, not so for some other types of pumps.
