Just curious - there are posters to this BBS who seem to have plenty of time to (fun) work on their cars... I'm just curious as to how much of the (demon) "work" at a job (I mean attend - my presence on the BBS suggests I don't work the whole time) the average Pelicanite does.
I'm (I hope, for everyone's sake) at the upper end - 50-60 hours/week and sometimes a lot more... Hence I don't often get much done on the 911s. Note, this poll can take multiple votes and you should vote for your hours worked band and whether you tend to work extra some weeks, many weeks, or never...

Hi Bill
2002 engine is waiting for me to have some time (couldn't work on it last weekend, and probably not this coming one either...). I went to the V8s on Sunday so can't complain about that! My difficulty is that I definitely cannot work on the car in the evening during the week without issues - I don't get home 'till too late most days, and have other things to do... You know, I wasn't smart enough to vote on the second part of my own poll. Never mind, statistical integrity is over-rated...

As a business owner, I'm not sure where the workday starts and stops. I'm thinking about, and developing ideas for, the business 24/7 even while out driving the 911! -- Curt

Self employeed computer geek. Like Curt says, days often blur to night and vice versa. And what's a weekend? P-car has become very important outlet that gives me something else to think and dream about. . . Man, I 've got to get a life!

Unemployed, and it looks like I'll be that way for quite a while, there don't seem to be a lot of DBA/sysadmin jobs out there.

I was at the V8's too......now I really want to get a 930 like Darryl's!
Interesting survey. Having thought about it a bit, I'd have to say I spend less time actually working now than I did pre-Porsche. I also tend to squander a lot of time browsing this board, its a bit like having a constantly updating interactive Porsche magazine sitting on your desk...its just too easy to click in to see whats going on.

2 scenarios for me.
1) Normal week in the office= a cruisey 37.5 hours, split however I want whenever I want. This is Porsche territory. 2) Seatime or fieldwork= at least 12 hour days, normally 14-16, usually for 1-2-3 week periods. But they pay me lots more for that :-)

Hi Graeme. Where are you based? In the city? I'm in Newmarket, Cam's central.

Ha! Was that before or after the turbo seal blew!!! Have you ever looked at his wheels - they are 17" Fuchs - he told me they are made by a guy in Australia and are actually forged not cast ally. For those not there (99.999999% of all those reading) Daryll Greer's (?) 930 was easily the fastest car in a straight line in the NZ Porsche championship races (loooong back straight). He was keeping up with the GT3 Cups for a while (despite being on R compound tyres vs the GT3s slicks). By the way, weren't the GT3 guys a bit "my ***** doesn't stink"? Maybe I'm just paranoid. Hope I didn't offend anyone.

"Duck Hunting....
Hey Curt, you forgot to factor in the hunting as a time to "mull over" business ideas.??" Ha! Believe or not, my current business was put together with a couple of associates in the duck blind. Really! No better way to judge someone's character than to spend several hours in a cold wet swampy duck blind with them. ![]() |

GT3 guys, the other week at the TargaNZ a GT3 was going so slow I yelled "My mother drives faster than that!" to the guy. In fact he was going so slow he probably heard me.
Matt I'm in Newmarket right now. I'm at Unilever in the Erickson building on Carlton Gore Rd. I'm only here for two days, hence not calling you and Cam up for lunch, and it's kind of intensive so I thought I'd wait and catch up some time when we can all be a bit more sociable. |

My hours are very similar to Matts. When I'm in the office doing normal duties it is all about "work minimization" around 40 hrs a week. When I'm at sea or in the field I pretty much don't stop working other than to sleep. Some locations I end up at take around 18 hours of 4x4 to get there and set up. It is easier to get the job done and get home... I normally take time in lieu as a result (I calculate the time in my favour

I have a minimum billable hour requirement of 1850. That's billable - actually being charged back to a client - not being in the office, answering the phone, responding to inane questions, putting on seminars, meeting potential clients, etc. Bonus time kicks in around 1900. So I work hard and play hard and a quick visit to the PPBBS a couple of times a day keeps my mind clear enough to attack the next block of billable time. Which makes it possible for Baby to reside in my garage.

It will...when you're in a hospital, at age 40 plus. And that may happen sooner than you think now.

MRM...
If you're operating your OWN business, I would say "just do it". BUT, if you're 'employed' ( which it sounds like you are), it ain't worth it, especially if you've got young children. You'll see, down the line, that there's more to being an American than income. Don't mistake my message, capitalism is great, but at the pace you're off to, the "price you'll pay is non-reversable".
..ask those who've owned a business !! BTW, gods speed. |
