Sunroof guide rails (3.2 vs 964)

I am in the process of fixing the sunroof on my 88. I got a new left side cable knowing that it would either have to be modified or a 964 guide rail used with it. I decided to update the rail, and I have ordered the 964 part. Does anyone have any helpful info on using that part? From reading /searching I understand it needs to be trimmed or cut shorter, but any expanded info sure would help me out.

Anyone?

Trim to the length of the old one. Not that hard to de-fuzz the old cable and grind the slider a but to fit the old guide.

I was hoping you would jump in here! Which repair do you think would be more robust?

Now that I think about it more, if you have the black carrera guides, I think they're the same length as the 964 ones. I haven't ordered any in years, so it's just from old memory. I just modify the 964 cables. The polished aluminum guides are shorter. Either way works fine.

I do have the black guides, but the diameter of the cable slot is of course too small. I'm hoping the 964 ones solve the issue. They are on the way.

Ok, this is super frustrating. I have ordered and received two sets of 964 sunroof cable guide rails. Bot sets are identical to my 88 rails, and the 964 cable won't work without modification. Does anyone have a photo comparing the late and early rails? I guess I will just mod the cable, but I'd really like to know the story with these parts.

Have there been any updates with this? I was trying to do the same thing, but it appears the 964 rails are the same as my 87.

I revisited the Tech Thread and found this helpful comment from "NB". Figured I'd put it here in case someone else digs for the same info in the future.

"An alternative would be to upgrade to the later-style 964 guide pieces, but these are rather expensive to replace." – Unfortunately, this option is not so cut-and-dry for sunroof guide replacement. The 964 guides are longer than the pre-89 guides and won't fit with all of the front air dam pieces. Specifically, the two pieces that sit at the front corner of the roof rails. Coincidentally, these pieces are not upgradable because of the lack of an actual part number or identification in any Porsche parts diagram they do not officially exist. The solution is to either A: Use the pre-89 guides and modify the cable pieces; or B: Modify the 964 guides to fit with the pre-89 air dam.
