New 3.2 Carerra Owner

Hi All

Just a quick hello and intro from a new owner of a 3-2. I'm completely new to Porsche/classic car ownership and have been drooling over the thought of owning a RHD (I'm in the UK) 911 from the 80s for a several years.

Originally wanting a 70's 911 I've settled on an '84 3.2 as the prices of the former are stratospheric and the later are getting a bit silly in the UK (for RHD) - that's and I liked the character of the 3.2s I test drove
. I have spent a few weeks looking at options and frankly given budget most were absolute dogs... Those that were not were priced accordingly.

Here's some snaps of my india red car Carerra... It's fairly tight with some small areas of rust that will be addressed long term when I do have it taken down to the bare bone.

Short term? Brakes ceased on my 80mile drive back home. So I'll be changing all brake pads, pads, calipers and upgrading the hoses this week. Not sure if this will also lead to a change in brake master cylinder? Its done some high miles and has no recorded service for 30k - so I'm assuming the worst.

Thereafter there is an issue with the heating system. Heat constantly blows... The thermostat stat appears to be disconnected however the servo appears to be making a noise.

There is also an oily smell coming through so I've decided to strip out the heat exchanges and muffler and upgrade them to some S/S SSi heat exchangers. I'll change the flaps if need be and check to see if the thermostat box is actually working.

The boot (trunk) light was disconnected. We accidentally connected this and the cable burned filling the car with smoke - so something has shorted somewhere.

So lots to do for now! Lots of fun to be had! Any recommendations or pointers would be welcomed - I'll keep this thread updated.

Long term I seem to want to do the cliche thing of back dating it... I'll decide in time. For now I just want to enjoy the car!

Welcome! I'd love to see your car. However, your pics didn't come through. You will have plenty of support here. Good people, articles, etc. If you haven't already, start picking up some repair manuals too. Bentley (Good wiring schematics), factory if you can afford it, and others. Sounds like your car may have sat for awhile. I would rebuild all your brake calipers. It's easy and not that expensive. Start fresh and have have the piece of mind you can stop without rear-ending someone! Have fun with her!

If you're talking about the front trunk light, I "fixed" that thing at least 3 times on my '84 Carrera, and it shorted out every time within a month. Finally just disconnected it. On the '77 911S I just brought home, I noticed that the same wire is hanging free, so it must be a common problem.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Here's my new baby..

Unfortunately it wasn't James May's - I was around Goodwood at the time it was auctioned, mine is nowhere as tidy!

I'm going to be swapping out all discs (uneven wear), pads and calipers - I just don't like the idea of skimping on brakes. I don't mind it not starting, but I do mind it not stopping :-)

As a side note I've dismantled the thermostat between the seats and note the connecting rod ball joint has broken so not levering the heater flaps - however I'm not sure if the servo sounds healthy. I've uploaded a video here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xFGoGunGQkg

Does that sound like it should do?

I've manually moved the flap arm and after 5 mins or so some heat still comes through the centre dash vents - is this normal? What else could it be?

Thanks for your support again!
