Labor rate to replace one CV boot?
 
915 axle, already pulled.....just need the CV R/R, boot installed and greased up. One hour shop rate for labor? I don't have the tools I used to.....please, no dickhead replies, I've had a rough day.

Bob,
There are no "special" tools required to do this and if one boot is bad your likely to have to do the other side soon.

Why not just buy what is needed and save the hassle. then you own the tools.
If you have the ability to remove the axle i can't see why you need help with the boot.
It's a 15 minute job.

Maybe this is a joke i'm new around here.:confused:

The boot was cut when the heater hose let go and the wire sprung loose and cut the boot. The axles have less 10K on them and were bought as a set from Eric at PMB Performance. They have been sitting in sealed bags since replacement with another set I had on the shelf. Long story....needed them NOW and fixing wasn't an option. I used to break a lot of things when active in DE and AX, so a lot of spares.

Fixing is now an option. Don't they need the CVs pressed off? Maybe I should pull out the Bentley. CV grease and tranny oil has to be the worst job I know of.....that's the reason for this thread.

Not being a pansy like Bob K but I get ill from the smell of the tranny grease/oil.

The CVs are held on by a snap ring after you clean away all of the grease you will see it. It is a very easy job to do.

It's a messy job, I did it a couple of months ago. Mineral spirits or turpentine in a tall bucket to clean them up. Take the snap ring off. They can be frustrating to get aligned correctly. Pay attention to the alignment of the inner and outer pieces. The fat curve aligns to the thin curve and vice-versa. I used Swepco CV grease when I put them back together.

Remember that the newer boots have the thinner flange and the bolt sizes are different. Not an issue if you already had the newer style.

Crud.....just found my Bentley under ten boxes of junk.....OK, my brain cells are realigned. Still a nasty job. I'll wear my HEPA filter mask and gloves. Order the boot thru Pelican via Eric.

I had all four done on my turbo two weeks ago ,it cost 180.00. I was fine with that. They was taken off cleaned ,cleaned the motor free of grease . Used the boot kits from pelican and the mechanic said they was very nice . Good luck Joe

It's an easy job. I have the tools, But I opted to puss out and paid to have mine cleaned, repack, inspected, and new boots put on. The $ was worth the lack of a filthy mess. If I had a cleaning tank....

Before and after. They will paint the axles too, I asked not to. Cv joints inspected fine.

yir gunna pay to have them refreshed after removing and ultimately having to reinstall them another day??? you'd might as well just drive it to the shop and go have a latte n a pastry until the shop calls announcing it's complete..... I do my own and only dirty my hands once, if my math is correct JB has dirtied his hands 2x..... ;) again:D

I have done three of my CVs and when the last one cranks out the death rattle, I am buying another shaft.

Yes, I did it. Testosterone down a bit some 15 years later. Puss out sounds great.

Trust me I was doing the math on 2 new axles :) Pull and replace.

Thing is mine are as delivered with the car (85k miles '89) and the joints are in excellent condition otherwise...
