Check oil, engine dies?

I am under the impression that the engine should be warm, running, and the car on a flat surface when I check the oil. My engine idles at .5 bars below 1,000. I unscrew the oil cap and before I can get the dip stick out the engine dies. Why?

yes, and make sure the front cooler (under the fender) is hot - check be feeling the pipes under there.

i had this problem following changing the two large breather hoses behind the airfilter box. one of them has a restricter in it that i had to remove from the old and transfer to the new hose.

have you changed the hoses recently??

the dieing is caused by too much vacuum leak. si if it not the restricter its a leak somewhere - probably.

It's the air flow restrictor in the oil line from the engine to the oil tank fill tube. Looks like a little metal hat with a hole in the top and fits inside the oil line. They're expensive for what it is but it works. I think they're around $20 new from the dealer. You can probably find one from one of the guys parting out cars. I picked up an extra to keep as a spare.

You can take a vice-grip and clamp it on the breather hose line, that way it wont stall when you open the cap to check your oil.
But you should find the small restrictor to fix it right.

I experienced the same problem with my 1987, and the solution was exactly as Dan described it.
