Engine/Gear box Numbers help
Hello all
I'm hoping somebody can help me , I'm trying to find out if an engine number is correct , I've checked all the usual places and cant find this number anywhere? the Engine number is *900350* I think it is a 2.7 engine? & the Gear box number is 915-301-101-0P Thank you in advance John ![]() |

That # is for 1965 (Sept 64-Dec 64). Type 901/01 2 liters
The Chassis Match would be between 300001-300235 The matching transmission 901/0, 5 speed Post a pic of these numbers. Having said all that your photo does not look like a 901/01... ![]()

Those aren't the right numbers.
The engine serial number and type number will both be roughly where the rubber strap from the airbox hangs down in your picture. It's on the passenger side of the casting of the engine on the upright that holds the fan and down the block itself next to it. They are not side by side but at 90 degrees to each other. The shroud color suggests 2.7 and it is CIS like most 2.7s but it appears to be aluminum, which would be 3.0l or later. A 3.0l would also be CIS. The gearbox number is on the bottom rib of it. You have posted a casting number that shows that it is a 915. Gearbox type number will be something like 915/44 followed by the serial number.

Whoa,
You were posting while I was posting. One look at the picture and I didn't go that far back in serial numbers. That would be a damn early and super valuable case if that's the real number. It would explain the aluminum piece but not the CIS. I've heard of 2.7s on early 2.0l cases but almost always on carbs or MFI, never on CIS. That's funny about the search results.

Look at this thread:
Third number on engine case The type number should be 901/01, and the build number below it should be 250. If so, this is the 250th production 911 engine out of VIN 300243. Need more info from you on this engine.

I went and had another look today and found the number on the engine but not sure if im looking in the correct place on the gear box flipped it over and looked a rib on the bottom and nothing there just scratches. You hit the jackpot on that engine.
The gearbox is most likely a plain jane 72-74 915 gearbox. If you took a picture of the clutch guide tube and the tailcone I could nail it down a little closer. The engine on the other hand is quite special. That case is easily worth 5 figures.

I bought a job lot of bits in an auction, which included a 1974 US spec Targa , loads of boxes of bits , seats , exhausts etc. still not gone through everything. Story was a mechanic owned it and the engine and gearbox have been rebuilt. not confirmed but the engine does look like new under the dust. I had a letter of authentication from Porsche for the chassis and the engine doesn't match the chassis they say the engine/Type number should be 6349042/911 S-G 911/98 so its a mystery where the engine has come from? The Targa has had a turbo wide body kit on and has been converted from LHD to RHD at some point, not sure of the quality of the work until the car is stripped. I bought for a project was thinking of restoring ill wait to see how much work is involved before i decide or might just sell as parts , interesting about the value of the engine what is so special about it ? is it a 2.7 or 3.0? The engine is special because of the early serial number. No offense, but it would be a fool's errand to put that in a 74. That could pay for most of your restoration.
Ring up Autofarm, Gantspeed and Maxted-Page and tell them what you got. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by their offers. If you can find the actual car it belongs to it might buy you a nice already running and driving '74.

You describe it as a 2.0l case and give them the type and serial number. The conversion is inconsequential.

Same answer as before. You cannot tell the displacement of this engine. It is a very valuable engine case. Nothing else about this engine is particularly interesting. It's got a bunch of later parts around a very valuable case. Did I mention that it is a very valuable case and that all that matters to that value is the case?
