Parking brake loose and squeaky

Hi Guys,
I noticed that both of my rear wheels are behaving oddly. I have the car lifted off the ground, in neutral, and I can spin both rear wheels nicely. If I apply the parking brake, the wheel rotate about 2" at the tire surface, and make a squeaking noise, like metal on metal. After about 2" of movement, they stop turning abruptly with a clunk. I can rotate back and forth 2" and have a squeak then a clunk at each limit. It feels like the shoes are not secured in place completely. I know i will need to look inside, but what does this sounds like?
Thanks in advance,
Dave

I did some work on my 87 last year and noticed the e-brake shoes were pretty much on their way out - the pads were cracked. Yours are older, so just maybe it's time.
I can't guess what yours are doing, so a check is in order.
It's not hard to check them, but you will have to remove the caliper and drum.
The bottom caliper nuts is a bit of a bugger/character builder.

Left E-brake pad - top.
just showing for fun - it may not show up here, but there were numerous cracks in the pad evident. And I needed more than the usual 4-5 clicks on the hand brake to apply the e-brakes. These were originals (112K miles), so I replaced them.

sorry I didn't answer your first question - mine did squeak a little - I didn't do the exact test you did. I needed to pull a few more clicks before they worked, and the last observation, the pad material was about half the thickness of the new ones.

I did mine while I was working the rear CV's and wheel bearings.
That meant I could assemble them on the ground and install as a unit.
The way you would have to approach it will make installing the connecting spring a bit more difficult, essentially assembling to the wheel - so some more research will be in order.

maybe not what you wanted to hear, but I hope this helps.
