oil thermostat clanking?
Anyone ever had their oil thermostat make weird noises once opened sounding like a throw out bearing going? I am getting some strange noises in the back of my new to me 1977 911s that has been sitting for a couple of years and it only starts making any noise back there after 180 degrees on my gauge cluster. It could be something else but I would think starting at 180 degrees is an indication of my oil thermostat.

are you talking about the Tstat on the engine or the one for the front loop cooler.
never heard of one making noise. if it sounds like metal it probably is. let the temp go up. if you can drive it and the temp comes doen to normal the Tstat is OK. if you really think it is the engine Tstat making noise i think they are only around $80 or so, you might just replace it. i had one stick on my 77. my engine temp would go up but never come back down. it might hit 240 or 250 if i let it. once i replaced it, put on an 11 blade fan and backdated exhaust my temps ran around 190-200 unless i was really pushing it.

I haven't put a listening device to the area yet and at first I thought that it was the throw out bearing but when it happened a second time at about the same motor temp I began to suspect the engine oil thermostat making the racket on and off. The sound is noticeable and has me concerned. It does operate as it should and opens and closes fine and I feel heat going to my fender cooler line above 180 degrees or close to that anyway so it is opening like it is suppose to. I hope that it is the oil thermostat and not something else.
