Steering Wheel Shimmy
OK, firstly, this car sat for about six years. The Goodyears were flat spotted. The steering wheel would start to shimmy about 30-35 MPH, and pretty much go away around 60-65. No doubt centrifugal force. Got new tires today, and now the shimmy starts around 60, stays even up to 70-75, and it's worse. Every now and then it briefly goes away, but comes back after only a few seconds. It also seems to be worse when going slightly downhill. The car tracks pretty good, only pulling slightly to the right, and that could simply be the burm of the highway. I doubt it's wheel balancing based on my testing, so what's left? Struts? Toe? Or ????? I definitely don't want to ruin my new tires.
Thanx.

I would have the balance re-done. I have had vibrations with new tires many times. I had to have them re-balanced which fixed the problem. I have a theory about those spin balancers not doing a good job on Fuchs, but I digress.
You should also check your wheel bearings, ball joints and struts. Even brakes can cause a vibration. Wouldn't hurt to jack up your car and spin the wheels. It is not unheard of to have wheels or tires out of round. Even new ones.

How about a bent wheel? I have a bent one on my DD BMW, and it is a bear to balance.

Westy, a bent wheel could usually be fixed for under $200. It is the hassle of removing the tire, and sending it out....

Also, try to find a place that does road force balancing.

What's road force balancing? Additionally, while it looks much nicer, they stuck the weights on the inside of the wheel.

i had a vibration issue up front for a while. it was frustrating to say the least.
these cars are sensitive to tire irregularities, seek out the hunter road force machine that has been mentioned. sometimes even though you go through all the trouble of finding that machine there will be a gorrilla working it that doesnt know how to use it, but thats another thread. what finally cured my problem were the end bushings on the steering rack that connect to the tie rods

Yp. It's an old car, and things can go splat! If the balancing doesn't take care of the problem, then we'll just have to dig into the rest. Bushings and end links would definitely be high on my list. Most likely wont be selling the car until spring, so I have time to get it right. Think I have a rotor that needs to be turned too, so I can knock it all out at once.

I was having same issue and found 2 wheels were bent. Found a service that straightened the wheels for around $200 and resolved the issue.

A sticky caliper will also cause a shimmy. Hit the rotors with an IR thermometer after a ride and see if any seem abnormally hot.

Had my 911 wheels balanced at two different shop, still had steering wheel shaking, after reading this post found a shop that used road force balancing, like a new car, drives great.

This gives some validation to my theory about "spin balancers" not doing a good job.
Something to do with Fuchs? I have had to re-balance my front wheels every time I bought new tires. Funny thing is, I have my own bubble balancer which I used to re-do the balance each time. It has fixed the problem every time. So much for high tech.
