993 engine bottom end strength........

Does anyone know if a 1996 993 engine will handle 3.8 P&C's
without the possibility of damage? I have heard that the rod bolts and crank are weaker on the 993's VS. the 964 engines.

I am considering the upgrade.

Also for those that inquired about the 97 Turbo S engine and tranny, it is sold. I hated to let it go but I was told it would have required major mods all around for fitting it in an early 911.

Isn't the 993RS a 3.8L?

It may be, but if so I think they use a different crank, I don't know for sure.

993 and 993RS use the same crank. There are several different versions of pistons/cylinders/valves/heads/intake manifolds.

All the rod bolts have been 9mm since the 3.0, which were 10mm. Steve Weiner and others have recommended that they be replaced with ARP or Raceware bolts in the 3.2 and up if the engine will see sustained high RPM (such as racing).

The 964 crank is supposed to be a little more robust than the 993 for racing purposes as well, but I wouldn't worry about a 993 crank if you change out the rod bolts.
