1995 993 Tacho - foggy behind the glass

I hope you can help with my tacho. On cold days of 10 degrees Celsius or 50 degrees Fahrenheit the inside of the glass is foggy. Tacho only. I have also noted on a normal warm day the glass is VERY slightly grey/foggy on the inside [perhaps stained] Is this a common problem on 993's? What is your suggested fix? I am thinking of removal + clean glass plus perhaps drill a breather hole? Am I on the correct path? Any help would be appreciated. Any removal tips would also be appreciated.

I have placed this blog on the 993 forum but no answers.

Saw this lonely post and felt bad for you. : (.

Look here:

Also, from this looks of it, the gauges remove just like the earlier cars. Gently pry the rubber gasket away from the dash around the gauge and then wiggle the gauge out towards yourself. Tak a picture of the wiring and then start disconnecting them. The bulbs are usually the hardest to remove. You may need to pry gently with a small flat-head screw driver to get them out.

Good luck.

Depending on how nice a result you are looking for either DIY or send it off to one of the re-builders. I don't know about down under but here in the U.S. North Hollywood Spedometer is getting great reviews. I used them myself and couldn't be happier.

Not sure I would drill a hole for a breather. The housing of the 964/993 is plastic and I think air can get in at the back. That being said your inside might just need cleaning.

When you open the bezel be really gentle and go slow so it doesn't mess up the bezel ring too much. Most of it will later be invisible and covered by the large rubber gasket.

Cheers,
Ingo
