245/50/16 tires on 9x16 rim?

I'm foregrounding a follow-up from an earlier thread because I need to make a decision soon (my apologies).

So the question is: has anyone used the higher profile tires on the rear w/o clearance issues? The car is an '88 Carrera set (I believe) at euro-ride height.

The idea is to give me some tire options. I'm basically out of options on the 245/45/16's that are the right size.

I have them on the back of my Turbo Look, not sure they would fit a narrow bodied car at Euro height

Those are 25.7" tall, according to Tire rack.

I have 25.6" tall 225/60-15 tires on my original wheels for long trips, and they fit with no issues diameter wise, on my car. I'm pretty low, but I have stiff TBs.

NOT sure on the greater width.

Why not buy at set of Bridgestone RE11 tires? They are great, the Tire Rack shows to have them in stock...

Because they will not mount them with the all-season tires currently on the front. And the fronts are new (less than a year old) and I would prefer not to replace them. And no place to store them in the car if I do replace them.

245/50 has been done, but as with every tire fitment question, it will depend on your specific car, ride height, and the actual tire dimensions. It won't be that hard to fit by any means and may just necessitate a tiny bump up in the rear, if you're at "euro height" (meaning, regular ride height).

Only slicks and 2 high-performance summers (RE11/A and Toyo) come in 245/45, as you found out.

probably already understood, but -- taller tires will make your car slightly taller geared -- which will likely compromise performance -- not sure how perceptible that performance hit would be, but wanted to clarify that issue.

Are the 245/50-16 rears you're looking at the same model as your current fronts? Especially on our 911s, it's best to run the same tires front and back . . .

Someone has the graphs for performance differential (Bill V., maybe? Probably).

The 245/50 is more than one inch taller, which sounds terrible to me. I find the stock gearing to be too long. I plan on running 225/45/16s in the near future.

Thanks for all the replies. At this point my only real concern is clearance; I don't want rubbing or scraping. Basically want to make my road trip safely; I'm willing to sacrifice performance in the short term, until I find a more permanent solution (like getting 8" rims).

Running different types of tires on the front and back is a really lousy idea. A pair of RE-11 front tires is less than $300. Do yourself a favor and buy 4 tires.

You could transport the old front tires in the car, unless you have a ton of luggage. But, what's the point? It sounds like you can't ever match them to a set of rear tires, so why would you keep them around?

Do yourself (and any future passengers) a favor and make a good decision here.

You cannot mix tires so that is out. I have the RE-11's on my 9"er's and they are the bomb in handling and performance, so that is my recommendation.

Or match the ? tires you have in front to a new set on the back, size be damned.

Can't mix them though - wouldn't do that on any of my cars.

The fronts are BS Potenza RE970AS Pole position. Now, unfortunately, turns out that Javadog's sensible advice isn't so simple, because the RE11's in the front have a different speed rating, and the Tire Rack people aren't sure whether they would install those either. So some sort of mismatch is unavoidable, whether that of all-season/summer or of speed rating V or W. ...

I am running Kumho 245/50R16s on my 9x16 rears. Kumho runs small IME, in both width and aspect, so after i put them on, i did a little bit of a speedo check, both via GPS and timing between mile markers. At an indicated 60mph, I run 61mph actual. 60.9, but whatever. Timed, averaged over five miles, I run 60.7 at a 60mph indicated. My car is also at Euro height, and the tires do not even come close to interfering with the body.

FWIW, the speedo is the least of my concerns. The greater diameter affects performance.

Forget the speed rating difference. It's meaningless in the real world. Mixing all season tires and high performance tires is much, much worse.

If it makes you feel any better, I've run those tires and they work fine.

If you are getting the tires installed at the Tire Rack, have them ship your old front tires home.

Except when the diameter is exactly the same as the stock tires. You know, like when the speed reads dead nuts on?

Hey Guys - I'm in the same boat - searching everywhere for tires that will fit the Fuchs 9 and 8 x 16" diameter for my turbo look targa. What a pain that manufacturer's are abandoning all us folks that want to keep driving these cars on the road. Its nice that they have track tires, but anyway - I thought about going a similar route described above but just found some Michelin S2 MXX3 reproductions for the turbo size wheels on Coker tire -
https://www.cokertire.com/tires.html#tire_brand=Michelin&tire_rim_diameter=16&tire_type_multi=European
Has anyone else gone this route or have any reason why these tires are a bad choice for the turbo size wheels ? Any insights on this would be appreciated - thanks ! Jim
