I remember seeing Dave Mason make one, but I think it's a difficult wood to find and work with, so likely wouldn't be cheap.

Vacca Rabite on 914 world was making 917 style knobs at one time. I dont know if he still is but it would be cool to see one in black / gray. or try hotrodshiftknob.com they can make them i dont know if they do wood though

Off topic a bit, but I installed a Momo ergonomic shift knob awhile back, and it feels SO much better than OEM ... helped almost as much as my John Walker 915 transmission refresh! But now my car is no longer Anatomically Correct

Piano Black in not necessarily Ebony. That can be any number of dyed woods.
Real Ebony is a joy to work - almost like soft metal. Polishes to a gloss with no finish. I buy logs to make guitar parts from. It's sold by the pound and is not cheap. There are several varieties, but the pitch black kind is Gabon Ebony. Celyon Ebony is also quite beautiful, but not as dense. I never though to make a shift knob, but if I were, it would run in the hundreds of $ range. -C freebornguitars.com

Dave's (Pelican name: slodave) ebony knobs are gorgeous. A very deep black (obviously) with a few hints of blonde streaks. If you don't get ahold of him here, you can also try Facebook (Porsche 917 inspired shift knobs by Dave).

Phoenix, I was over at Dave's shop a couple weeks ago and held an ebony knob in my hands, so I know he's been working on it. Give him a shout once again. Or PM me your contact info and I'll get it to him.

Hi,
I'm surprised no one has mentioned this yet...Manuel Campuzano (Mexico City) has for a long time been making 917 style shift knobs, but primarily been marketing them on the Early 911S Registry's site. He is a true artist. No one better to deal with as well, a true gentleman. He has made several custom knobs for me and I have always been more than satisfied. (That's actually an understatement). I'll include a photo of one that is primarily made from ebony wood, I can't remember what the lighter wood is in the knob, but you get the picture. FS: 917/908 Balsa Wood Knobs ![]()
