914/6 or 911RS steering wheel.

I have a 380mm wheel with the part number 914 347 805 11. The date stamp is 1972. The plastic base on the back is removable with 4 screws. Is this the same wheel as the 914/6 and 911RS wheels except used on regular 914-4's ?
Couldn't I just change out the horn contact bracket on the back and use it on my 911?Thanks

steering wheel

If your wheel is a stock 914 wheel it seems that it ought to work. My recollection is that the 911 Carrera RS, early RSR and 914-6 GT used a 14" (380mm) wheel that had a thicker rim (914 347 803 10)

Per Michael (user 70SATman) your wheel according to the p/n is a 70-72 914/6 wheel (of course, the date stamp identifies this more accurately as a 72). 914/4 would have a p/n in the 914.347.090.XXX series. The RS wheels are purported to be slightly different in the how the hub is relieved around the splines, and a couple other small areas. I do not believe any of these differences are visible once the wheel is mounted.

Being that your wheel is of 914/6 origin, the turn signal cancel ring should be 911 compatible. So yes, you can use it on your 911. The Early S Reg. has some great threads on these wheels (that's where I got my information).

Yours is indeed a 914/6 wheel but not the same as the 70/71 and RS wheels.

You need to have the back adapted (drilled and counter sink) to accomodate the turn indicator cancelling ring.

The 803 10 wheel is the hard rubber early 914/6

803 10 wheel

The 803 10 steering wheel I have is leather covered and was purchased from the factory in the summer of 1975 I believe.

There is a faux leather wheel from '72 and up but the part # is an 809 00.

Are you sure yours is real leather, and is yours a direct fit to a 911? It has the proper hub, interesting.

hey blau, if that wheel doesn't work out for you I'd be interested in buying it from you for my 914-6.

Blau,
You have a 914 wheel, no doubt about it. The rear plastic hub and the recess for the hub nut confirms it. Go to the 911S registry and search "380mm wheel" and you will learn alot. Your wheel can be slightly modified to fit a 911 but you need to drill and tap two holes to accept the 911 turn signal cancel ring. They are a nice but subtle improvement over the big wheel.

911s55:

It looks like leather to me based on the wear marks. Don't know for sure. I bought it at the factory and stuck it in my 69S way back in the 70's.

My factory Porsche Parts manual lists the 914 347 806 10 for a 2.7RS.
