Question Rear deck shock install?

I have installed a Carrera tail on my 85 and want to put the other deck lid shock in but after looking I can see where the back mount is located but do not see where to mount the shock to the lid hinge like the other side is mounted. Any thoughts??

There's only one on my car, so I guess that is it.

Well, since the factory didn't put a tab or gusset for mounting a gas sprimg on the left side, you have a number of choices:

Order the turbo part, weld on a tab, pop-rivet on a tab, or double-up on the right side with longer bolts/pins and spacers.

another member, whose name I unfortunately cannot remember, of the other porsche BBS helped me with this issue.

You can use two shocks in tandem on the driver sides -- yet it seems almost everyone who uses this method will find that the heightened pressure from the two shocks, when applied to the one hinge, can cause the engine lid to slightly warp up at the corner where these shocks are installed. The solution I am told is to use two shocks that are somewhat worn out so that the pressure is reduced, but still greater than a single shock.

On the other hand, you can attempt to duplicate the factory set-up, which has a single shock on BOTH the driver and pass. hinges. This is the approach taken by the other BBS member, and mentioned by Warren Hall. You need to either fabricate the mounting point at the firewall or buy it. I bought it used from PartsHaven who cut it out from a shell for very reasonable cost, maybe less than $25. But you also need the pass. hinge with the pin mount as well, which FreeFly on this list was so good as to send me.

good luck.

Mully!

I replaced a damaged whale tail on my 86'911 cab with a new factory tail. The new tail kit came with a new hinge bracket with the attachment molded in that you need to install the second shock. Yes, you do need two shocks to hold up the engine cover! E-mail me if you are interested!
