$34.95! Yikes!!!!

The little leather strap that holds the rear seat up broke. Man, there's got to be a better way to fix this. Any ideas?

Yes. Keep the broken strap, and all it's fittings. Then find a regional yellow pages. Look under "saddle shops"...

Thanks Paul and Walt. I need 2 for mine as well so a local saddle/shoe shop will be getting a call on Monday.

Must be the season for this - RHS broke early this month, then the LHS went a week later. Saddlery is the shot - could probably have a hice Harley style tooled and fringed pair made. ....or not.

BTW...anyone know how to get access to the end of the strap that is secured behind the back panel of the rear seat? Had a very quick look, and it seemed that the panel was fairly firmly [stapled? glued?] in place. What's the trick??

Many thanx,

My two broken rear seat straps are stiched in to both to the seat and the rear deck. I have assumed this is a job for an upholsterer. I'd love to make this repair myself if someone can share the technique.
Thanks.

You could always remove the rear seat backs, and solve the problem that way.

$34.95 yes, expensive for a tiny piece of leather.

However, how impressed are you guys that we actually have this obscure interior piece in our catalog, with a picture to boot! As I have mentioned before, we have just completed an extensive overhaul of our catalog, adding just about every piece on the 911!

Consider this! you guys are using a board that costs money to keep running and is offered free to anyone, and yet you dont show any regard for the person that makes it happen.
It's one thing to exchange money saving ideas by email or whatever but everytime someone on this board does that you are eliminating a prospective pelican customer and it shows a lack of consideration to Pelican parts when you do it on their forum. Yes, you saved thirty bucks and we all know 34.95 is on the high side for a little leather strap but consider the time and gas spent going to a saddle shop and explaining what you want done and possibly getting the wrong thing in the end, and it really has no significant advantage over the OEM strap with the snap in the right place. I know Wayne can speak for himself on these issues but if we all found other sources for our parts how long do you think this board will last. Come on gentlemen! lets keep that stuff out and keep this board alive.

Just my opinion

That's not really fair.

I'm a loyal Pelican customer. They always get my first call. If they have what I need, I buy it from them. I don't mess around with price comparisons on most items, because the service I get from Pelican is exceptional. In fact, I have never referenced another vendor in this forum if the part being discussed is carried by Pelican.

I don't know, but I doubt Wayne is offended that I used his forum to find a cheap fix to a small problem.

Scan the board. Folks give advice all the time on how to moderate the high cost of Porsche ownership.

I appreciate the enthusiasm for "Pelican loyalty", but you're preachin' to the choir.

Hmm, Moses, you're right - not terribly offended. I don't make money selling all of those little $34.95 parts (especially if they're Genuine Porsche - the markup is terrible). If you buy your other parts and the leather strap from us, then we get the sale = big picture. The small POS parts are what you may call loss-leaders, but it makes our catalog so much more complete than any of our competitors...

Thanks for the spirited defense Norm. Some people will go all the way to the saddle shop for small parts like these. It's not even so much the cost, it's the fun in making it themselves. Then there are others who can't be bothered...

That happened to me too. Both straps were ripped in half. I took out the back seats and added a rollbar!
Problem solved.

Wayne, you touched on a good point. Just another reason why I love 911's is because you can still get just about every original part that you need. Sure beats having to rely on ebay to find those small parts that you need.

Norm,
I think you are a little off base with your comment. Most of us realize Pelican is the place to buy. But some of us are a crafty bunch and find the solution in other ways than buying retail. Two years ago I never though of doing my own maintenance, always sending the car to the wrench. Do you think he buys his parts from Pelican? What I do know is that Pelican has new business from me that they never had before, So if I find a $10 solution to a $40 problem at a saddle maker, leave me be. I believe we are using this forum as intended.
