Orphan wire '80 911sc
I was wondering if anyone can tell me what this is supposed to be attached to. It comes out of the same bundle that goes to the ignition and distributor. It is red with white stripe and brown (ground I guess). I also would like to know where the engine compartment light gray power wire is supposed to be connected to.

That's left over from 78/79 engines.

Thank you. Now can you tell me where the Engine compartment light ( the one on the lid) plugs into?

The wiring harness in the photo goes to the thermal valve. Does your car have a 3.2 transplant?

Okay, so it has a 3 liter. Does it have a thermal valve?

I don't think he does. As Bruce says it's an orphan from previous years.
How bout you take a pic of your thermal valve. Articulate exactly where it is on your car with the connection point clearly visible, and then the OP can determine if he has one. Here's my 81 US: ![]()

Thanks guys. I don't have the thermal valve so I'm content that it is a leftover.
Now who can tell me where the power from the engine lid light comes from. I found mine disconnected. Here is the picture of the end. It is connected to a ground which goes to the body but I can't seem to find the power side. ![]() ![]() Thanks again. |

Wow, an engine lid light...I didn't know that our 911s were equipped with such a luxurious convenience. Seriously, I've had two 911s, and both did not and does not have a light. Can't help you with this one.

I kept it short.
A little leg work goes a long way.

Look, I was just trying to help. I really don't need to explain myself, but I was at my son's soccer practice when I responded to the OP.

There is probably another "new" band-aid on the newer SC's that handles it's function.

I dug into the back of my engine bay - drivers side. My light was removed when I painted the car in the early 2000's. I cannot find it to this day.
I see a brown wire and a white-ish wire. I know these are the lid light wires as I have the ends taped off. If the hot just floats in there naked they will blow the left side driving markers if makes a ground. They climb up the driver's side hinge when positioned properly. The whitish wire is hot. The wire you state connects to ground should be brown by established convention. It's 12:15 in Ohio so I am leaving the shop and off to bed. Advise as to what you would like me to do to assist. I have several wires bunched together with zip ties (including light wires) - way in the back on the wall- and I can open up the cluster to track down the origin if you would like. Meaning exactly where the set of two originates. Do yo have any wires on the hinge? There are two fatties that feed the rear window de-fogger. Those don't count.

Thanks Bob. Im going to bed. I'll look at the wiring diagram and see what it should be connected too. Maybe you could help me locate it. I'll post more pictures.

It just so happens that I replaced my tail with a ducktail recently and I haven't put the light back into place. I only have a few minutes to look now but the wire comes from the driver side decklid hinge and drops down from the top behind the fuel filter and accumulator. I don't feel it below the filter area so it either disappears into the wall through a grommet or it could be going behind my sound pad. Sorry I don't have more time to trace it further right now. If I get home early enough this evening I can try to trace it out.

This is what Wade needs. Just the physical proximity of the origin from the wire loom.
I'm goin' in......

If it is an original 3.0 EURO engine from the 80's you should have a thermal valve, and that is where this connects to.
It is not necessary but it actually did something useful. It kept the vacuum off the WUR during start-up too enrichen the mixture. So if you have a WUR with side vacuum connection you should have a thermal valve installed. Unless ofcourse you live in warm climate.
