2.4L Turbo???

I'm, weighing the pros and cons of finding / adding more power to my 2.4 w/ PMOs and L cams.

What do the experts see are the pros and cons of this/ a 2.4L Turbo? Is it reliable? Will it last?

I've never heard of a 2.4 turbo. My gut tells me that a 2.4 could never stand the strain of a turbo?

Does anyone have any experience with Chapell Performance and Design?

I always thought that would be a great way to spice up a 73.5 cis T. The motor has all the tough internals to handle the power and low compression to boot. The cis is a no brainer to get set up for a turbo. One could use the tubo off a Dodge from the late 80's. Seems like fun to me. And cheap...er.

It looks like clean installation with intercooler. Is that CIS on it?

If it is built as it looks, it's nice piece of equipment. Expect ~260HP tops...

Ooooooh...interesting!

I've got a '74 911 with the 8.0:1 compression, not a 'S' model.
Any thoughts on how my well-maintained engine would handle the turbocharger? I have yet to hear of anyone adding boost to this engine...only insults!;)

P.O put a BAE turbo kit on my 75 911S back in 83. It still has it. 5 psi, 8.5 CR, 190ftlbs and 206 HP at the rear wheels. Runs great, and it's a kick. I think it's a great idea, if:
1) you plan on keeping the car (you'll never recoup the $$$)
2) you're also planning on getting twin plug ignition.

Questions? I will attempt to answer as best I can.

Ok so this sounds like it MIGHT be an option. I've learned I may be getting a good sized bonus at years end and, given I'm single and this is found money, I'm considering this as a major Christmas and B-day present (for the next 5 years).

I'm concerned that this is a new engine and has "never been run. 0 miles". Plus "turbo" has always brought images of "gas guzzling" to my layman head.

What questions should I ask, what pitfalls could I potentially run into? How much of a risk is this? (It may be found money but I'm not keen on throwing it away.) For the cost of this thing (say it's 10-12k), could I do something better, stronger, faster, more reliable to my 2.4/ PMO/ L cam set up?

My list of questions for the seller so far are as follows?
- Why was it built and never installed/ run?
- Does it come with any type of guarantee/ warranty?
- What type of case? (R?. Magnesium?)
- Piston and Cylinder types used?
- Compression ratio?
- What cams are in it?
- Chain Tensioners upgraded?
- Can it / should it fit a standard exhaust and heat exchangers
- ???

What am I missing? (And I'm sure it's a lot...)

Well, you need to see all receipts and talk to the builder. It's going to be a lot of money, so go see the guy in person before buying. Does the engine come with modified sheetmetal? Shrouding around that turbo it one of the biggest PITAs involved, IMO. What are you going to do for a muffler? Find out how much the kit alone costs and determine if DYI is feasible.

What are you trying to accomplish? A turbo car will have crappy resale, no one will want to work on it, and you'll get thrown in with the V8 conversions at the track.

Doug (salivating),

I meet the first criteria for sure...do plan on keeping her.

Hadn't planned on twin-plug ignition, but I take it this would be deemed necessary. I'm not familiar with BAE...do they have a website with information on their kit and do you know of other kit manufacturers? Without troubling you too much for details (who am I kidding), what are the general changes made for the conversion? I'm thinking my 8:1 compression makes it an even better candidate? What kind of $ do you estimate?

Ryan, check your email.

I would never buy a rebuilt motor with 0 miles on it, unless it was rebuilt by someone I knew or it was a core price. You would have no idea how it was rebuilt.
