OK Folks, Curt has really forced me to up my game! This should keep people busy for a day or two...
The driver of kart number 29 would one day step up to Porsche power with famous results. But for now he's just trying to get the mixture right and get past number 36. ![]() Who is our mystery driver? ![]()

Nope. But since it is hard to judge the era based on the kart technology, I'll say that this picture was taken in the early '70's.

Hurley was already back from Viet Nam and racing 911's with Peter at the time that this picture was taken.

Well, not much to go on here! Kart racing: so probably in Europe or South America. Probably under 18 years of age at the time (early 70's). So, probably broke into the major leagues in late 70's and was a star in the 80's. Stephen Bellof? -- Curt

I can only think of three possible ways to hone in on this:
-Helmet -kart number, and -driver size (he's tiny relative to #36) None of these give me enough to go on. I would have guessed Peter Gregg, too, and also been wrong.

Curt and Dave are starting down the right path, so here's the next clue...
![]() Our driver has moved up to cars and is even wearing the number 1. There are a number of clues in this picture, but I'm not going to tell you what they are... BTW - He still hasn't settled on his final helmet artwork yet. ![]() Have fun! ![]() I'll check in tomorrow morning to see how people are doing.

Actually Derek had already come (and gone) as a factory Ferrari driver at the time the karting picture was taken. Derek started to get a couple of Porsche rides in the early '70's. Derek is evergreen!

Ok, I noticed that John said Porsche power, that could mean a TAG-Porsche F1 engine, how about Alain Prost? Wild guess.

Bruce may be right - that looks like an awfully big nose sticking out of that helmet in the first photo.

![]() Bruce is Correct!!! Yes - Between 1971 and 1975 "The Little Professer" was racing karts prior to an incredibly successful stint in Formula Renault (Last night's picture.) with 12 wins from 13 races in the French championship in 1976. Here's a picture of him receiving his "Elf Paul Ricard" trophy from the late Ken Tyrrell in 1975 with the ever popular J.M Balestre in the background. ![]() Here's a site dedicated to Prost with a lot of pictures and a record of his accomplishments -- which are VERY impressive. ![]() In 1985 is was 1/2 of a point behind Niki and in 1986 and 1987 he was World Champion powered by the Porsche designed and built TAG-Turbo. The thing that I always found impressive about Alain was that he was rarely intimidated by his team-mates. Lauda once described how when Prost showed up at McLaren, that his speed was faster then Lauda's, so Lauda changed his strategy for consistant finishes rather then poles and wins. The result, Prost had more wins, but Lauda took the championship. The following 2 years Prost took the championship. When Senna arrived at McLaren Prost adopted the same strategy of consistancy which seemed to irk Senna to no end. And like Lauda, he came back after being written off as "washed up" to win his last championship. PS: Alain also competed in a couple of French Rallies and apparently did pretty well.
