Clutch/Flywheel for 2.9 and 911 Transmission
I'm going to be putting a 2.9 in my SWB 911, and I thought rather than waste the numbers matching 901 transmission, I purchased a 71E 911 Transmission. My understanding is that they are slightly stronger, and may be better suited from my 280ish HP 2.9.
I have a 915 clutch and flywheel sitting in my garage. Are those usable with the 911 transmission? Thanks much Pelican!

6 bolt flywheel attachment to crank and pressure plate Yes, with the 1970-71 911, 901 type trans. You will need 1970-71 901 type disk and release bearing. No to mention 70-71 clutch cable and related small cable attachment parts. I do have a very smooth good used 70/71 release bearing I could let go With @ 285hp you better get a hp disk and P-plate.. |

The '71 Clutch is unique to MY 70 and 71. It uses a pull clutch with a unique cable where the cable housing goes through the hole in the trans side case and the housing actually pushes on the release arm.
The release arm, cable, cable ends, and throw out bearing are unique to this trans. Also unique is the clutch disk. It is 225mm but uses the smaller VW size spline. The flywheel and pressure plate are the standard 225 mm ones. The weakness of this system is the "ball pivot" that the release arm uses as its pivot. Good luck keeping one of those from breaking after a couple of years.

Good info. I'm leaning more and more towards selling this trans and going with a good old 915...

915, with that much hp maybe a good idea. Especially if you do any drag race starts. 901 main shafts don't like that. You will need to make a little clearance "bump" in the trans tunnel between the back seats, for a 915. You will want an 1972-75 cable speed o type 915 most likely?
I do have most all parts available to sell, you may need ether way. Have fun! DS |

That would be my recommendation. Unless you already have all the bits and pieces for the 911 trans, I would just do the 915. It's a much better long term solution.
