3.2L with SSIs, engine oil line routing??

I have a 84 with a 3.2L that has SSIs installed by prior owner. I have to replace rear wheel bearings in the wide body (M491) cab and found another surprise with the main oil line that leaves from the bottom of the LHS (driver side) engine.

I believe that when they installed the SSIs they decided to route this line via alternate routing. This line goes from the bottom of the engine to the oil cooler thermostat for the front cooler, it goes from the engine bottom to the RHS wheel well and connects to the thermostat at the front of the rear wheel well.

Problem I found is that in routing it this way they left the line sort of loose and it's been rubbing against the inner LHS CV Joint! A disaster waiting to happen! I can easily leave it routed this way and simply secure it better with some custom made fasteners. This is most likely what I'll do but I'm curious about this routing is it normal to route this line up over the front of the tranny and then over to the thermostat? Seems like this is not the normal route?

Next post has pictures.

This is the line at the bottom of the engine LHS:

Then it routes toward the front of the car going over the LHS inner CV Joint then up over the front of the tranny to the RHS rear wheelwell. Here's it's rubbing against the CV Joint:

And here is how it comes into the RHS rear wheelwell:

UPDATE:
After some research I now know this is improper routing and worse yet with improperly made hose! This hose seems narrow, I'll be replacing with the proper 2 lines needed for this setup. For anyone interested these are part numbers 911-107-739-10 and 911-107-729-10.

I also learned that Elephant Racing offers lines that route up and over the tranny but at least those are Metal lines in the engine area.

It's amazing what prior mechanics will do on these cars.

If you are using the crank sensors on the bellhousing the "universal" line will foul the sensors. Ask me how I know or go here:

I did consult with Chuck, this interference was as a result of not having a 3.2 with the sensors to test on.

I'm going to use factory lines, already sourced the on that goes to the engine at a decent price. Found it for sale via private party but it's new part never installed. Need to get the other line that goes to the thermostat.

I have very similar exhaust as you but 2in2out M&K pipe with custom cap for one side if I want to turn the pipe into a 1out. Very loud in 2out config and drones bad below 3000RPMs, sounds mean as hell at 4000RPM or higher. If I cap the one side it's much more drivable with NO drone.

Thanks for the heads up on the Elephant Racing lines.

One more thing I noticed is that the RHS SSI is rubbing slightly on the shock, just needs the tin bent a tinny bit so it won't rub. How close is your SSIs to the rear shocks? My car is a factory wide-body so that may also be why I have such tight clearances in this area?

My car had good clearances, ball peen hammer, and care will fix the issue! My 2.7 install required a little massaging as well.

I was getting close to buying the elephant 'up and over' lines. Did they say there is going to be an update or mod to future lines?

Call Chuck, if you are using crank sensors you will have to modify somewhat.

Why use ER lines? Are they better than the stock ones? Just curious.

If you do some searching on SSI's on 3.2 you'll find ER mentioned a lot. I don't know if that's because it goes up and over the trans versus the steel line that goes under the trans (IIRC that's how the stock line is routed) and then a flexible line to connect to the thermostat.

On a side note, I'm working on installing HE's from a older car on my 85. With your SSI's is your heat backdated or do you still use the blower in the engine compartment? If so while you've got the car up in the air could you send some ducting pics? So as not to muddy up your thread, you're welcome to email me the pics if you decide to take them.

My heat is backdated with no rear blower. You have several options for backdating and the front footwell blowers alone are more than you need. My car is a cab and will burn you out of the cabin even at near 0F outside temps. PM me I'll gather some photos. Also plenty of threads on this topic.

Factory early style lines lines for a clean install. Need two but sorry I dont have the p/n with me.
The one with the curve comes from the bottom, drivers side of the engine curves under the bellhousing area and as you can see is next to the oil cooler.

Can the cross over factory line that goes under the engine be installed with SSIs in place?

BoxsterGT 08-27-2015 07:46 AM

:)

Sal-

You have the correct lines as listed in your post #3 and shown above.

You must drop the drivers side HE to fit the "crossunder" line.

Buy these new from our host.

I have alternate hoses if needed that "crossover" the trans and I am local to you, but best not to complicate things and proceed with your current plan.

Len

:)

Tight, don't think so, left side should come off.
