87 Targa on Bring a trailer

Most of you are probably familiar with the site Bring A Trailer I'm sure. There is a Black / Red 87 Targa on auction that looks pretty good. High miles at 180K but still clean and original. With a day to go, it's not getting much love, maybe the lowest bid I've seen on an air cooled 911 on there. the Bid is at $10,500

1987 Porsche 911 Carrera G50 Targa 1987 Porsche 911 Carrera G50 Targa | Bring a Trailer

The reason? 13 years and 10k miles ago, the engine was rebuilt by the dreaded Motor Meister, oh and it has a wear spot on the drivers seat bolster.

Now the seller posted leak down results that show 8% on 5 cyl and 12% on the #5 cyl.

I'm not interested, I have nothing to do with the car at all, but for $11k it seems like a good candidate to drive till it drops and then do another engine rebuild.

Most posters are talking $20K for a rebuild and how it wouldn't pay to do an engine rebuild. Like a P-car is supposed to be an investment. I'm not really writing concerning the price so much as the perception that the car has no value due to the MM rebuild. I bet if you said that the engine was tired and needed a rebuild the response would be better.

Any thoughts guys?

Will get picked up cheap, all the documentation will disappear and will get posted by someone as a clean but no-history car for twice the price.

The price is fair considering it's worth itself in parts alone. Curious to see the final bid.

Perhaps, but if anyone googles the VIN, now they will find this thread. WPOEBO910HS161699

Fine so long as you want to do a rebuild right away.

I've seen this as a friend was interested. Its a roach. Complete mold interior, needs new targa top, motor by "those guys", bonnet backed into, car kept in old barn next to the river lots of critters. Its a travesty to see what a negligent owner has done...

Wow, just goes to show that photos never tell the whole story versus seeing the car in person.

Very odd. That car does not look that bad. I would call under twenty "well bought".

I agree and I think that car will go for around $15000.

fiminod,
Is it (black/red Targa) rusty anywhere? RE your bonnet comment... Looked like the rubber smile was rusted and warped.. or is the bumper itself bent? Thanks (-:

I mean...If it's a rust-free, driving G50, it's going for 20s. Perfect candidate for a rip-out build, and a lot of Pelicaners are looking for just that at five-years-ago prices.

Umm what part are we calling the bonnet?

Seller posted a reply about the MM issue. There was a shop referenced that might be able to comment on the roach statement.

It's at $12,500 now with 20 hr to go.

lots of photos of the front end, the seller isn't trying to hide anything it seems.

i agree, no indication the seller is hiding anything. Would have been real easy for him to fail to mention the name of the shop that rebuilt the engine.

The bonnet or "hood" appeared to be backed into/or slid under and pushed down. Smile is warped/bent and bumper appeared to be a bit twisted. Car was seen by a reputable shop (that I've used for 20+ years) over a year and a half ago for rebuilding brakes as all were seized and did the compression test, as well as few other bits. Car hasn't been driven much since then and like I said is parked an a wet barn and is loaded with mold etc.

There are no photos of the underside. From the looks of the rusty deck lid latch bolts there may be some issues.

There is rust on the A/C pulley.

It's funny how you can never tell about things like a moldy musty interior from pics.
This is why I've decided I'll never buy a car sight unseen.
