Thick flange SSI off an 86 Carrera 3.2
Will they bolt on to a U.S. 1982 3.0 motor or are the 3.2 thick flange ssi's different from the 3.0 thick flange? I searched and read til I was blue in the face and still didn't have a clear answer.

From what I've found the 3.2L thick flange have a tube that extends above the flange that inserts slightly into the head where the 3.0 SSI's don't have the tubes that extend above the mounting flange.

So you'd say they are not compatible?

Both the thick flange 80/83 and 3.2 thick flange have insert into the head but they're different size. Smaller on the 3.0 by a few mils but I have seen them on a 3.2 with the owner thinking they were correct. Knowing the tubing is too small to flow for a 3.2, I've never put a set on but I have seen thick flange SSIs for a 3.6 without an insert but was told they were for 3.6 and wound up going out the door on a 3.2.
Worse senario, owning a 3.2 set and trying to put them on a 3.0. Grind off the insert. If they are actual Porsche heat boxes, the inserts knock out by breaking three small spotewlds then thick flange work across the board. Bruce |

Ok thanks Bruce. So other than slightly different insert diameters the 3.2 SSI's should work on a 3.0 after cutting/grinding off the inserts. Good to know thank you.
