Noisy Engine

Last year I used Brad Penn 20-W50 synthetic oil and the year before VR1 synthetic
both worked well but with oil leaks.
The engine is a 2.4T and not sure if it has ever been opened as I have no records of it's past and it likely needs a rebuild but I'm not ready for that yet.
Anyway this spring I changed the oil with VR1 racing 20-W50 conventional to try and
stay away from the synthetic oil to see if it would clear up some of the leak issues but the engine seems to be noisier.
Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

How long since you adjusted the valves? What kind of noise is it?

Hi Tmaull thanks for the reply Just adjusted about 1000 miles ago and sounds like a dry bearing sound from chain case area or #8 bearing area?

The nose bearing won't be dry, generally there is no wear factor for it because is under case oil pressure. If you were dry, you would already lost bearings at 1,4,and 5 rods.
Check your chain tensioner so.

Thanks Bruce I think I found some thing else. Just noticed some wearing on the bottom inside of the fan shroud so I loosened the nut a bit to take a little tension off the belt
And it seems smooth again. Cross fingers that that was the problem.

If your leaks are slight try a couple of cans of ATP-AT-205 re-seal from Amazon. Been around forever and has great reviews. My 85 does not leak!! And runs like a top with 150,000 on the clock.

Sounds like you have your noise issue solved. Hopefully.

Just from 20+ years with a 2.4:

Being a mag case engine, the main sign of trouble is low oil pressure......When pressure drops near zero at idle when warm is a wake-up call.....

.For me, I was was able to prolong things several years by addressing oil temps.....Keeping the cylinder fins clean and adding some type of oil cooler can put off a rebuild for many years.......G'luck...
