Setting ignition timing
I have a 914/6 conversion with an original 6 engine that has been bumped to 2.2 liter. Running 40 webers, Bosch dizzy, MSD Box, MSD Blaster coil and standard points. Trying to set timing correctly...I know spec is 35 degrees BTDC at 6000rpm. I painted the 35BTDC mark on the flywheel yellow so it's easier to see vs. trying to see the marks on the pulley which is pretty difficult when you are dealing with where that is in a 914 engine bay! I have an adjustable dial timing light from Harbour Freight and have a question. Do I set the timing light dial at zero, bring the engine up to normal temp, hold the rpm at 6000 and point the timing light at the flywheel and rotate the dizzy until the mark is like what you see in his pic or do I set the dial on the timing light to 35 like the pic below and then shine it down on the flywheel and set the timing? Sorry for what may seem like a basic question...timing is not my strength and I'm just trying to learn. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1441762780.jpg

I believe if you dial it to 35, then it will flash at TDC when you reach 35 degrees advanced.
It allows you to check intermediate advance positions. If you want to know your advance at 3000 rpm, rev it to 3000 and then turn the dial until you read TDC on the crank. that will be your advance at 3000. |

rev the engine with the light on. the timing will stop advancing before you get to 6k. adjust it at idle the repeat |
